I’d like to create a composite of multiple pictures with one as a background and four more on top with different opacities.

You need to add layerse to your origanal canvas, then you can ad a picture to each layer, and adjust the transparacny for each one.

…. adjust opacity for each one.

Not [just] being pendantic. Even though transparency and opacity are simply opposites, Debra will work hard to find a transparency adjustment.
