No worries Dan.

You don’t say what version of PS you are using, but lets go with v7.

On the toolbar there’s a Text Tool. You know about that. In the OPTIONS bar at the top, there’s a Text Pallet (visible after you click on the text tool). Make sure that Leading is set to Auto, tracking and baseline shift are set to zero.

When you type, just click once on your background and start typing. A new layer should appear in the layers pallet.

Make sure you are not using the horizontal type MASK tool.

Peace,
Tony

Hi Tony, thanks in advance. Using ps7

Not getting the text Pallet upon clicking the text tool? Got zillions of other palette options???

Is it hiding somewhere?

Ok…got the "character" palette, though it did not open on its own. Both settings per your original note. Not using Horiz. mask, regular horizontal.

I type, enter, nothing…????

Dan, have a look at the big icon at the far left of your Options Bar. Click once on that to drop a Tool Presets menu, then click on the little right-pointing triangle at the top right of this menu. Scroll down and you’ll see two sub-menu choices: "Reset Tool" and "Reset All Tools". This will often fix a problem simply by returning to default some tool parameter you may have overlooked.

This is the first thing anyone should do when a wonky Photoshop problem won’t respond to other attempts at a fix. If that doesn’t work, try ditching all of your Photoshop preferences <http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/6712.htm>. Reinstalling Photoshop doesn’t reset them, and you end up using an old prefs set with the fresh install. If the problem resides in corrupted preferences, a reinstall alone won’t fix it.

Hope that helps, and gives you a fresh insight into troubleshooting procedures.

Ok…did reset tool, no luck
then reset all tools, no luck
ditched all presets by starting ctrl +alt+shift on photoshop start up…still nothing

Any other options? DS

If it worked before, then there’s simply something corrupted somewhere. If the disk is legal, you can rule it out as the source of the problem.

Have you tried different fonts?

It is a legal copy, new. Just got the video pro bundle…new computer, new install etc…

I’ve tried arial, courier, tempest sans etc..no luck.

just re-installed, no difference. While I cannot say I know photoshop, I am not a 100% geek, maybe only 99.8% I’m at a loss. The first thing I needed to do with my new software/program, doesn’t work.

What are my other options to figure this out or solve what is not right?

New observations…now I am finding that as I type, using only text keys on the keyboard, I am activating other functions besides the letters. Is is possible some other toggle preset for different hot keys is tripped?

It seems very odd.

Summon a friend who IS 100% geek to come over to your house and figure it out.

At the very least, offer him or her pizza and beer, whether they figure it out or not. It shows you’ve got some class and appreciation for their time and knowledge.

That’s what I do when I’m stuck. Doesn’t happen often, but it happens. Between my brother and me, we can solve any problems our Macs might have. Again, it’s rare, but it happens.

I forget when this changed:

Does version 5.5 allow you to type directly into the document window, or does it pop up it’s own dialogue box for text entry, with an "OK" button when you’re ready to commit it to the document?

I guess that will be my plan…and here on Maui…my choice would be fresh Mahi or Ono w/ my own mango butter, broiled coconut molokai sweet potato mash and grilled pineapple

Thank you for your feedback.

Don’t know anything about 5.5, 7.0 is my first real version…used a limited edition a few years ago. Generally no tech the past year, been traveling and just getting things going again. Seems like nothing but hassles from ordering the computer, getting cables, now software…ready to go back to pacific islands and surf without the grief.

So what about the keys activating different functions?

letter f, jumps between 3 functions, one with black screen, not sure what the other two are

letter s goes from text tool to clone tool

letter a, text tool to path selection

I don’t know what’s up??????? most other keys are doing something odd.

Is there some function control w/ hot keys…this does not seem normal.

Reset your preferences. I know you reinstalled, but look in the faq, or use the link that phosphor provided earlier and reset your preferences.

Your report of hitting the "F" key changing your screen display, means you are not in text mode.

Reset your preferences. Did I say reset your preferences? If I didn’t, that’s what I meant to say.

Also, click on text tool, draw a box. You should be able to type.

Reset the preferences <grin>.

Peace,

Forgive me if this sounds patronizing:

When you tap the letters on your keyboard, these are shortcuts to different tools. Hover over the various tools in the Toolbar and you’ll see those letters revealed in a little pop-up tool tip/text hint. If they don’t appear, Go to "Edit—»Preferences—»General…" and click the box labeled "Show Tool Tips" in the Options pane. These keyboard shortcuts, and MANY more are also detailed graphically on the Quick Reference Card. Keep that Q.R.F. handy while you learn.

Tap the "D" key to set foreground and background colors to default black and white. Now, tap the "T" key. This will select the Type Tool. Make sure it’s the "Horizontal Type Tool. Confirm that you’ve selected the Type Tool by looking at the Tool Bar; the background of the icon will be darker than that of the other tools. Next, click in your document window and you’ll see a flashing "|" cursor. You may also click and drag with the Type Cursorr within your document window. This will create a Paragraph Box. Again, a blinking "|" cursor will appear. Start typing, and the text should show in your document window. When you’ve finished, tap the "Return" or "Enter" key on your keyboard. Look at your Layers Palette and you’ll see that a new text layer has been created.

If this doesn’t work,—after all, you’ve ditched preferences and reinstalled already— I’m stumped.

Arte you actually getting a dialogue box during Photoshop’s launch asking you to commit to a preference dump? If not, then you haven’t reset them.
DS

Sep 1, 2003
Yes to dump. any no worries about patronize, go at it. Am I wrong to expect to see the layer effect on the image in the work area? The text shows in the layer. Maybe my ignorance has created a problem without one? I thought that if it shows on a layer, I should be able to see how it appears on the image itself? If not, how can this be done?

You’ve completely lost me now.

Do you see a TEXT layer in your Layers Palette? It’ll be indicated by an icon of a box with a capital "T" in it. Next to that icon in the Text layer will be a bit of the text you just typed.

Do you see text in your document window?

Dan, you might want to dig out that manual about now, and dig in for awhile. Your command of some more common Photoshop terminology will be of great help in the communication process.

One more note:

If you ditch prefs and reinstall yet again, make sure you then get ALL appropriate updates to Photoshop < http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=3 9&platform=Windows> before doing anything.

1. I am new to photoshop, don’t mean to irritate anyone, trying to do a simple operation that doesn’t seem very straight forward.
2. I followed the book exactly as described in both the manual, and adobe classroom in a book -the book has a picture and the text shows on the picture, this has never occured for me.
3. Text layer shows Text, and the typing
4. Document window never has shown the text shown on the layer…this is the original experience that prompted me to think something is not right. Whether it is me, the software config, computer??? This is why I am here, trying to do what seemed to be a simple step. I am hoping someone will assist in identifying what it will take to see the text in the image so I can determine if the size, font, etc…is appropriate for my needs. Since it has never shown in the document window, I am still nowhere.

Your patience is appreciated as are your comments, trust me, I fumbled through both books, faq, and every other thing I thought would have an instruction before resorting to this forum. ds

Now you’ve really got me. Just got the cd two days ago ps7.01.

Istalled, had this situation.

Dumped presets, no change

reinstalled, same

dumped presets, same

Are you indicating that if I either dump presets or re-install that I still need to download something? Shouldn’t I expect a new product recently delivered to be complete?

Whatever problem you’re having is endemic to your particular system. Photoshop has not exhibited this behavior for anyone using it properly, that I know of.

Please reassure me that what I am describing does not seem right? I am under the impression that as I add text layers, it should show all in the document window so I can track what I am doing to the image???

Phosphor FYI

I understand your frustration w/ providing info to a novice and apologize for taking your time…however,

Just for the sake of doing something different, I opened a different image and the text function worked exactly as I expected it should.

My new question is what might have kept a particular image, in this case a jpeg, from allowing for text writing???

Dan Schulte

If there is a layer above your text layer and if it is 100% opacity, you will not be able to see thru this layer to your text layer.

If this is the case, in the layers pallette, click and drag your text layer to the top of the stacking order. Then you will be able to see it on your graphic.

Hi Desiree…

What it came down to for me is still completely unexplained. I finally was fed up after trying to find my own solution, I came here and didn’t get a solution that worked and upset others as well. In my frustration I tried a different image, and it worked fine. I then tested ten other images, no problem.

Why this one particular image, ironically the first I tried to modify, wouldn’t allow for text is beyond me. Try some different images and see if it works before beating your head w/ reinstall, deleting prefs etc.

I still hope someone knowledgeable can explain why it wouldn’t work on my original picture. It was a jpeg without anything unusual…properties were not locked like hidden, or read, so you’ve got me. Try some alternatives and if you find a solution as to why, please advise.
