Hi. I do have CS installed on a PC and would now like to install CS3. But, I would really like to keep CS on the PC and install the CS3 on another PC. I have the CS3 update and so would like to know if the update version actually needs CS to already be installed, or can it be installed by just inserting CS serial number.

All the best, Ron.

CS3 update can be installed with your CS serial number…BUT you will need to have available your ORIGINAL CS2 installation CD.
During the installation process, you will be asked to insert the CS2 CD for validation before installation can proceed.
Additional comment: Be aware that CS3 does not include (does not install) the Adobe Gamma utility. If you do not have a monitor calibration system (X-Rite or other), search this forum for other software solutions.

Hi many thanks Peter. I have CS, NOT CS2, but I am told that it will update from that. I do have full Monitor Calibration so would not need Gamma.

So can you confirm that CS is ok, if it is not I will be very annoyed with the supplier who clearly state it can.

All the best, Ron.

As long as you’re upgrading (note that this is not an update, it’s an upgrade…updates are dot releases and free) Photoshop standalone versions and not the suite version you’ll be fine.

You can’t upgrade a suite version with a standalone.

Hi Bob. Sorry about the confusion, it is the UPGRADE that I have not update.

My book for CS3 has just arrived this morning and first thing I did was to look up this subject, but as with most books written about programmes, it hardly ever shows how to install the programme, I assume that that feel you should already have it installed.

However it does cover the subject of Activation and it states that TWO activations are allowed so they can be installed on two different Computers, but not use them at the same time. It also states that you can install CS3 on as many Computers as you like and than as I understand it as long as you go through the de-activate and re-activate proceedure, use them on any of the Computers, as long as you only use one at a time.

To be honest I find this somewhat confusing, maybe someone can explain in a straight forward without all the cotton wool wrapped up with it as to just what this means. It also mentioned something about it was just a matter of honour that you don’t use more than one at a time as there is no way for Adobe to actually know just how many Computers are using it. This is obvious because if you dis-connect from the internet, there really is no way, but your Computers still have CS3 Activated.

Maybe I am way off target here, but it would be nice to know. Incidently I am not trying to get something for nothing here as all I want fully functional are two PC’s with CS3, Upgraded from CS. BUT it would be nice to know that if I decided to use it on two different PC, ie change from the ones I first installed on that I can.

I am sorry about the long post, but I think it is quite an important subject, not just for me, but many others. All the best, Ron dps

The intention of the EULA is to let a licensee have copies of Photoshop installed and activated on two computers (eg laptop and workstation) but not to be used simultaneously.

Obviously he could install it on yet another machine but could only activate that copy if he first deactivated it on of the first two.

Hope that clarifies it for you.

Footnote: Registration (of the licence) is a one-time action and not the same as activation which is related to, and recorded on, a computer.

Hi John, thanks for your reply. Just a couple of things. You state that it could be used on yet another computer but only if it is first deactivated on the first two computers.

Does that mean that you cannot just keep it installed on one of them? ie: I plan to install on a Desk Top and a Laptop. However, I will almost certainly soon be wanting to use it on a different Desk Top that I am now building with Vista Premium on and would than like to have CS3 on that. I do want to keep it on the Laptop.

So can I just deactivate on the Desk Top and reactivate on my new Desk Top and the Laptop is still OK, or is it as you suggest, BOTH have to be deactivated? ie the Desk Top AND the Laptop and then reactivate both again?

I am sorry if my questions seem rather basic, but to be honest being well into my 70’s I really do find it harder now to keep up with modern advancement, but as a Photographer, I stiil need to. So many thanks for all the help, all the best, Ron dps

Yes you can; I notice I missed out a word in:

Obviously he could install it on yet another machine but could only activate that copy if he first deactivated it on of the first two.

It should read:

"Obviously he could install it on yet another machine but could only activate that copy if he first deactivated it on one of the first two."

Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks John, I had not even noticed that missing word.
Can I please ask another very important question. Maybe it should be a seperate NEW topic, but I will try here first.

I purchsed the CS3 Upgrade so I could upgrade from my CS. This I am sure will be fine with XP, but on my new PC, I will install Vista as I feel I need to keep uptodate on at least one of my PC’s. However, I have read on the Adobe site that CS does not and there are no plans to ensure that it can, work with Vista. So my concern is that I was going to use my CS software so I can install CS3 (which is supported for Vista) by either installing CS first, or by just using the Serial Number and having the disc ready, as has been suggested will work. But, if Vista is not compatable with CS, will this prevent doing what I planned to do? I hope not.

I am also surprised to see that even Lightroom is not fully supported by Vista in as much that CD and DVD burning cannot function. Another subject is I see that many say that Vista does not support Firewire, if this is so, that is a huge blow to photographers and especially Video Programmes.

It is making me think I jumped in a bit quick with Vista, but as I have already purchased it, feel I must get out of it what I can, even if I just use Photoshop Eliments 5 which I see is Fully Supported by Vista.

Thanks again for all the help and advice, all the best, Ron dps

I am not venturing in to the Vista minefield until I have to.

One of the Vista pioneers will no doubt come in here. As has been said elsewhere, you don’t need to install CS on the new computer to install CS3 – just have the disk ready.
