I am using Photoshop 7 on windows XP and we just updated our network drive to a 2 terabyte drive. With this update we lost the ability to save any graphic file to it. I can still however save graphics to the main HD (not a terabyte) and the desktop. Thinking it may be a flaw in the software; I uninstalled Photoshop completely and reinstalled the software and acquired the same results. I’ve updated to the latest patch that I know of and same results. Photoshop 6 will save fine to the terabyte network drive which really doesn’t make sense to me. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve the problem? It’s just irritating to save the graphic to the desktop then copy it to the network drives.
Thanks in advance

Well known issue.

It’s not the software, it’s Windows.

Adobe worked around it in PS CS and later. Workarounds:

Partition the drive, fill it with junk, save local and copy, or upgrade.

Bob,
Thanks so much for the quick reply, I was afraid those were what the options were going to be. Particining the drive might be the best way to go, because there is nothing wrong with our current version.

just as an fyi george, adobe doesn’t support saving to a network share outside of version cue (not sure if that was around in 7 or released w/cs). problems don’t ususally happen, but if (when?) they do, you could lose your work. photoshop doesn’t include the safety checks and verification systems that exist in the OS that make copying from a local drive to a network share relatively safe.

best workaround of those that bob levine listed is to save to a local hard drive then copy to the network share via explorer. then, not only do you not have to partition your shiny new mega-wad of storage* into smaller chunks, you’ll gain the inherent safety that the OS provides when copying files to a share.

just a couple cents worth of free advice,
dave

*(actually, i’d hate to break up such a cool large drive as that. the geek facctor of saying "yea, i just put in a 2 terabyte drive for our nas." (network attached storage) is worth it’s weight in gold! 🙂

We did not encounter a problem with saving to a network share in either Windows version 6 or 7 until the share was moved to a SAN (storage area network) that is over 1 TB. Breaking up the SAN storage into smaller units negates the whole reason for spending the money on a SAN.

Could you please expand on the "adobe doesn’t support saving to a network share outside of version cue " What exactly is the version cue? To me that states that PhotoShop is actually programed to run locally and not intended for large companies with networks and multiple users who share files.

Thank you.

Versions of PS of that vintage (4 versions back) were not optimized for network saving. The workaround is to save your file locally, and then transfer the file from the local drive to the network drive.

You might not have problems saving directly over the network, but others have, and they tend to be a bit upset when the file they have invested many hours of work on no longer works due to a bad save.

Version Cue will enable you to safely save across the network. It effectively saves locally first then copies the file across to the network drive utilizing the belt and braces error checking built into the OS.

Okay Chris, you’ve piqued my interest. What is the belt and braces error checking (if you can explain it in three sentences or less)? I’ve never heard of that term.

The term is mine. Error Checking is what M$ does when it copies/moves files from one place to another.

Because Photoshop has not a clue how robust any particular network is or might be, it cannot guarantee that saving a file to a remote drive will not produce errors. The OS has this error checking built in. It effectively double-checks that the destination file matches the source file precisely before deleting it.

That would be "belt and suspenders" in the US, wouldn’t it?

"belt and suspenders"

Ah but in the UK, that would be considered kinky. We prefer to see suspenders where they really belong – holding up a pair of fine nylon stockings. 😉
