Several kind folks have replied to my earlier requests for assistance with my "There was an error bringing the Help application forward" problem. But none of the suggested fixes are relevant to my situation.

This is because the only Adobe folder my computer has is: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2. That’s it, just the CS2 folder.

There’s no Adobe Bridge folder, no Adobe Stock Photos folder, no Adobe Utilities folder and certainly no Adobe Help Center folder.

The official Adobe fixes all refer to the following sub-folders, but because I don’t have a Help Center folder, I don’t have any of these sub-folders on my machine:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData\Cache C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData\Database C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData\Preferences C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData\Search

Someone suggested the following:

"1. Try deleting the Help Preference file by holding down CTRL+ALT+SHIFT whilst starting Help". (tried it – doesn’t work)

2. "Assuming ahc.exe is located in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center, delete the following folders:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData\Cache C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData\Database C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData\Preferences C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData\Search" (nope – ahc.exe is NOT there, I don’t have an "Adobe Help Center" folder)

I’m at my wit’s end:-( Anyone else have an idea about this?

Porty,

I would try doing a complete uninstall/re-install of Photoshop

John Joslin – thank you for replying. But have you actually read my question fully? If you would do this, you will see that the item you refer to does NOT apply in this case.

Len Hewitt. Thank you very much for actually taking the time to read what I wrote. It’s rare that people read more than a line or two, on forums like this nowadays.

You’re right to suggest a complete un\re\install. Unfortunately, I’ve already done this – at least three times. On the last two occasions I even uninstalled Adobe Reader, then used several registry apps to clean out ALL references to Photoshop and Adobe.

I’m starting to think that perhaps I was too diligent, and that I may have removed some native Windows ‘Adobe’ references, which somehow affect the installation of Adobe programs.

It’s possible that I’ll have to live with this, at least until the next time that I reinstall XP. I guess I should look at the positives – not everyone has a Photoshop that loads in 5 seconds!

The program works perfectly except for the Help facility, so I can always use one of my other PCs that have non-crippled versions of Photoshop if I need to access Help.

The moral of this story – DON’T USE "Photoshop Speedup" from AcroPDF.com to try and improve your Photoshop performance. My troubles began after I used this app. If your Photoshop is a slow loader – "Suck it up" as Adrian Monk says; it’s not the end of the world 🙂

To be honest, no: it was far too long.

Porty,

Presumably you don’t have Bridge either if you’ve no /Bridge folder…

What happens if you go to Start>Run>Bridge or Start>Run>ahc

Nothing happens Len.

But I’ve managed to repair the damage. Fortunately I’d done a full Acronis backup of C drive two days before I screwed up my system (by using "Photoshop Speedup" from AcroPDF.com).

So I’ve just reinstated the C backup, reinstalled Photoshop and all is now well.

Thanks again for taking the time to read my questions properly and make intelligent replies. 🙂

Hi guys,

I had the exact same problem. I fixed it by manually navigating the installation cd and dblclking the following two installation files:

Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) CS2\bridge\Adobe Bridge 1.0.msi
Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) CS2\help center\Adobe Help Center 1.0.msi

Hope this works for you too..

Oh, one more detail for above fix – after running the .msi files, I re-ran the main installation from the menu and then selected "Repair".

All is good now.
