When I first start up Photoshop, the Mem usage in task manager grows to over 800,000 K. A normal startup should be in the 60,000 k range. I have reinstalled the application twice now to no avail.
Please advise.

I don’t see that, I get 64K on startup.

It is definitely crazy. I am looking to update the BIOS on my board, but no idea if that is an issue. I am grabbing at straws.

I am grabbing at straws.

First, grab those extra fonts, filters and plug-ins you’ve installed, and move them out to a temporary location. If the numbers go back to normal, you’ll need to bring them back a few at a time until the culprit is found.

I run 2700+ fonts, all filters and plugins installed, but no third-party ones. Start with the the third party plugins & filters.

Hi Brian,

It doesn’t really matter what the maximum level of memory usage is in Photoshop. Although task manager is reporting that Photoshop is "USING" all that memory, it doesn’t hold onto it if some other application needs to us it.

What it does, is to keep the memory allocated so that it can continue to use it if necessary, it’s faster that way, but will release it if the memory manager needs it for something else. (Assuming that Photoshop’s current memory requirements are less that the allocated amount).

However, as others have pointed out, depending on what you have installed, your memory usage at startup will vary with the load that your fonts, filters, plugins and presets put on the system.

Hope this helps.
