I am using Photoshop CS3 under Windows XP. I am unable to get my prints to center on the paper on an Epson 2200. I was able to print properly under CS2 and other previous versions (as well as CS3 public beta as long as I dealt with the problem of the print function not recalling settings).

I have looked at the knowledgebase article on this question and it is not helpful. The suggested workarounds do not correspond to what I see on my screen when I try to follow the instructions. When I try to follow the closest reasonable approximations of the suggestions, they are not effective.

At present, the only "workaround" that will solve the problem is to print with Photoshop CS2, which is hardly satisfactory.

I’ve also searched the internet and seen a number of the complaints from others about this problem, but haven’t found a solution. I would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Photoshop CS3 was designed to center the print based on margins set in the printer driver. CS2 overrode printer driver settings and forced them to the maximum size possible, then centered the print based on that maximum available size.

So, the current advice is to find the option in the printer driver that maximizes the margins. When the margins are set to maximum, equal sizes, the image will center.

Maybe.

First, though, light candles and incense, douse the lights and sit in the middle of a pentagram star inscribed on your floor, ritually sacrifice six chickens and drink the blood, pierce your nostrils with their wishbones and summon your ancestors with monotone chanting for the secret procedure.

This may also help.

Or not.

Worth trying, though.

printing from cs2 or manually centering the print after reviewing the "print preview" are the only answers that i know for the nonce ….adobe is apparently working on fixing this …

Thanks for the suggestions. For the record (in case anyone else looks here with the same problem), I was able to get a properly centered print in CS3 by checking the "center image" box in the Photoshop print dialog and then checking both "center" and "maximum" in the "printable area" section on the "paper" tab of the Epson print driver. Part of what was confusing me is that these settings actually minimize the margins (by maximizing the print area) and I was looking for a setting to maximize margins (which doesn’t really make sense when you think about it) based on what I had read in various places online.

Anyway, I was about ready to try Fred’s suggestion of sacrificing chickens as a last alternative. The chickens are quite appreciative that another solution worked and have been admiring my nicely centered print this morning. 🙂

Having read the blog entry that Rick linked to and other online discussions, I am still mystified as to why Adobe would think that this change in CS3 is an advance, and why they wouldn’t do a better job of communicating a solution to customers. The workaround is far from a perfect solution–Epson warns that selecting maximum print area on the 2200 will result in reduced print quality in the expanded area.

Don’t turn the chickens loose just yet, John. If the general experience with Ps10 printing is anything to go by, at some time in the near future (and totally inexplicably) the printer module will revert to some unfathomable method of operation and alternative voodoo may still be required.
