Hi,

I have a picture here and I want to cut out certain parts of the picture in a certain shape.

I layed the layer with the shape that I wanna cut out on top of the image.

Now, I was wondering if it is possible in Photoshop to punch objects through pictures or other objects ?

I know that there is an option in Fireworks but it only works with shapes (as far as I know)…

Or is there another way to create multiple shapes and turn them into a marquee to cut those paths out … ?

Thanx for your help in advance !

Mike

Look up clipping layers in the help system.

Simple Layer Mask will do it.

Are these objects on transparency? If so, double-click on the icon in the Layers palette to make a "marching ants " selection. That can be used to delete, make a mask or whatever.

Lots and lots to learn. Lots of different ways to do everything.

Mike,

thanx for your reply.

Well, clipping masks keep the the part of the shape that u created (the mask)…

I need to do the opposite, I need to eliminate / cut out / punch through the shape that I lay on top of the image…

Basically, like punching holes (in a certain shape) into an image…

How can I do that ?

Create an inverse of the object and use that for the clipping mask. I.e., copy the object to a new layer, ctrl-click on the icon, press delete, invert the selection, fill. Use this layer as your clipping mask.

I may be misunderstanding what it is you’re trying to do Mike, but is this what you mean? http://www.myjanee.com/tuts/burst/burst.htm

1. DRAW THE SHAPE OVER THE PART OF THE IMAGE YOU WANT TO CUT OUT
2. SELECT THE PEN TOOL
3. RIGHT CLICK INSIDE THE SHAPE, AND SELECT MAKE SELECTION (THIS WILL CREATE YOUR DOTTED SELECTION).
4. IT WILL THEN ASK YOU ABOUT FEATHERING AND YOU CAN SET IT TO WHAT YOU WANT!!

Hope this is what you meant!!
