Hello,

How do I stop the view from scrolling automatically when zoomed in more than 100% when approaching the view border with a tool such as pen?

Thank You,
Martti

Notice that when using the Pen tool the scrolling does not occur when placing an anchor point; the scrolling does occur when adjusting a direction line. In my view this is a useful feature.

I am not aware that the auto scrolling can be disabled.

Indeed….that behavior is by design yet can be frustrating at times. In the days of slower processors (CPU & GPU), the zoomed image might not scroll quite so fast as to be nearly unusable, but times have changed. It might be a nice feature if Adobe could implement some kind of user-settable autoscroll speed, but so long as you’re familiar with the hand tool, it isn’t all too necessary.

I believe it is the Marquee Tool and any tool having a point-to-point sort of behavior that will cause an autoscroll. Curiously, the Lasso Tool and Freeform Pen Tool don’t behave that way yet instead allow what I’d call a "virtual selection" extending past the window border into the hidden part of the image. This latter behavior extends to other tools as well, such as a Brush Tool where you can paint into the hidden image area.

In any case, the way to avoid autoscroll happening unexpectedly or in a way you don’t like, is to stop shy of the edge when using affected tools and press the space bar to temporarily toggle the Hand Tool. Then, shift your image as needed, release the space bar, and continue with the original tool as desired.

I’m guessing you are using CS2. In the latest release, the scrolling has been slowed to suit the faster processors.

Aha!…so it has Chris…That’s one detail I’d not noticed about CS3. The speed of the autoscroll is quite usable.

I forget the proper terminology, it’s late here, but I imagine you have the image maximized, i.e.no immediate frame around the image. Under that condition the image will run all over the screen when you use the marquee tool, and others.

The answer is not to run the image maximized, but leave it in the frame, then grab and drag the bottom right corner of the frame and pull it out a bit – you will get a diagonal double-ended arrow – so there’s a few mm of free space around the image. Now you can use the tools without the image running away.
