I’m losing my MIND! If I ctrl click a layer element in the main document window to switch to that layer, CS selects a hidden shape layer that is above the layer I am trying to click on. I can’t figure out why it is selecting it if the layer is turned off. It’s driving me crazy, because I have so many hidden layers that interfere with what I’m trying to select. Is there a way to turn off selecting from all layers to only those that are visible? I don’t know if it is just because these are shape layers or if it would happen on any layer that exists above the layer I’m trying to select. HELP!!

Have you tried resetting your PS preferences?

Unfortunately, that is how it works – PS does not discern hidden layers from visible when ctrl-clicking with move tool to select a layer.

I’m using Windows.

Am I mistaken, or is this just a CS thing? Whatever it is, it sucks. Why on earth would I want to select something that I can’t see? It renders the ctrl click selection absolutely useless unless you only have a few layers.

I can only select visible layers on a windows PC using CS2 and CS3. I don’t ever remember it being a problem on CS either.

Try resetting the Prefs as Cyb suggested.

I tried resetting my prefs. No luck. There’s GOT to be a way to fix this. After further investigation, it seems that the only invisible layers that are selected are shape layers. It selects the shape path even when that layer is turned off.
