I just installed CS3 on Windows XP and am having trouble with my scanner. When I go to File->import I see the scanner listed. When I click on it Photoshop just quits, no dialog box, no nothing. I rebooted the machine, nothing else is running and still get the problem.

I still have Photoshop 7 installed on my machine and I can import with that which leads me to believe the scanner twain software is working properly. Could having this old version of PS still installed be the problem?

Thanks,
J Morris

I think not, although I could be wrong.

I have completely uninstalled CS2 before switching to CS3, and the same thing still happened… tried reinstalling the scanner, still with the same results.

I’m using a Mustek ScanExpress A3, on Windows XP

Thanks.

i’d get the latest drivers for the scanner anyway.

Unfortunately, I think they don’t have anything newer than the driver I’m using for the scanner … which I recently got from their site

bummer. can you scan with another applet? i think wia is available from inside the ps import menu (is for my epson anyway).

I have the same problem with a Mustek 1200 III EP scanner and there are NO new drivers for it.

Ok discovered something odd;

I can scan through PS CS3 After scanning something from Microsoft Office Document Scanning, and then opening it in cs3…

I’m having the exact same problem with my Mustek A3 USB ScanExpress, but in Windows Vista. The scanner was previously working in Vista without a problem in Adobe CS2, however, immediately after installing CS3, the scanner no longer works and causes CS3 to crash if I click FILE -> IMPORT.

Like the individual above, I did manage to get the ScanExpress to work ONCE with CS3 after opening the A3 USB software in a different application (non Adobe). However, I have not been able to repeat this with success.

Considering the number of issues posted online with others experiencing the SAME problem with CS3 (with DIFFERENT scanners), this is clearly a CS3 issue … something has been altered since CS2.

have you tried the fix just above your post mike?

Dave … Yes, but I only have Adobe CS3 and Office 2007 installed on this machine. As mentioned, everything was working fine with CS2 … The problem is with something changed/new in CS3.

When the problem started, I tried installing some standalone scanner utlities and those worked without any problems (I’ve since re-imaged my computer back to remove any changes made by this software).

The only solution I’ve seen posted in other forums is to disable the Adobe TWAIN plug-in. But this problem is not exclusive to the Mustek A3 USB ScanExpress. Others are reporting similar issues with HP and Epson scanners … The only thing in common is that people upgraded to CS3.

I dunno. I’ve got an epson 1280 photo scanner and it works fine. i upgraded from cs2 to cs3 ee after using the cs3 beta from day one. i’d say the problem is more likely in the driver or some config on your system. this is backed up by the fact that the 3rd party scan utils you tried worked for you.

I appreciate your input, Dave, but I disagree with your logic. The fact that I tested 3rd party sofware and it worked (not to forget the fact that scanning with CS2 also worked) means that there is something new/different about CS3 that is preventing the scanner from working properly.

For arguments sake, here are folks with similar scanning issues in CS3 …

Scanner not recognised in Photoshop CS3 <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc3d171>

Epson 1250 Scanner <http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/58/858907>

Of course, these are only 2 examples of several available on the web.

In addition, it appears that the CS3 TWAIN plug-in is causing issues for many other users to the extent that CS3 crashes during startup. The only solution being offered is to disable the TWAIN plug-in …

Photoshop quits before it finishes launching <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc3e346>

Just because guys like Dave are lucky enough to be using their scanners, it would be really nice if the issue could be fixed properly so that the rest of us can scan via Photoshop as usual.

but I disagree with your logic.

you can mike, but i’ve been debugging windows problems professionally for about 25 years now. your mileage may vary.

every thread you posted has to do with the mac os. this is the windows forum (you’re not running mac osx are you? if so, you should post over there). twain, (any drivers) are tied to the operating system. problems with one OS do not correlate to problems with the other.

to clarify my logic: 1. the fact that it works for most people in windows, 2. mine works, 3. the original poster found a fix for his problem and 4. yours works with other drivers (3rd party scanner util) points to the fact that it is either a driver problem or a problem on your specific system.

Thanks again, Dave … No, I’m not using Mac OS … I’m running Vista.

Regarding your point #4 … I didn’t change any drivers, just the scanning utility software. For example, the Mustek scanner comes with its own scanning utility. That works fine. Other scanning utilities like Scanitto < http://www.vista-files.org/programs/masters-itc/scanitto.htm l> and FreeKapture <http://www.vista-files.org/programs/tsoft/freekapture.html> also work fine (in Vista).

As previously mentioned, scanning in Adobe CS2 (with the exact same drivers) also worked.

The ONLY change is that I upgraded from CS2 to CS3.

I’m glad for you that your scanner works, but the only help that offers me is to know that scanning SHOULD be possible in CS3. The fact remains that my scanner, along with those belonging to others, do NOT work in CS3 … And we’re all (Windows and/or Mac users) experiencing the same issue.

I can’t make it any clearer … There is something different between CS2 and CS3 that is causing VERY similar issues for many OTHER users. Hence, it would be appreciated if Adobe could examine this issue further and provide a patch/solution to get things working again.

Just for the record, I don’t actually know what fixed the problem on my machine (running XP). I went into msconfig and removed everything from startup and the problem was still occurring.

I de-install a winzip utility and the next day the scanner started working in CS3. I really don’t know for sure if uninstalling the winzip software did the trick. I posted my experience in case it could help someone else.

I have always able to invoke the TWAIN interface from MS Word and Photoshop 7 with no problems. Since this problem is so sporadic and it only occurs with CS3, I fear that there is a memory allocation issue within CS3 and I’m just getting lucky.

agreed. have you filed a bug report to get them on it? this is a user to user forum and there’s very sporadic coverage by adobe engineers and techs (and on personal time only from what we’ve been told). if you’re sure it’s cs3, file a report.

my bet is it’s your vista drivers or setup though. 😉

good luck.

I had the same problem, and all my drivers are the latest. Scanner is fine in all other applications, but not CS3. In the end, I decided to reinstall CS3. Big, BIG, BIG mistake.

Dave: Yes, I have already filed a bug report with Adobe.

On a positive note, I tried using Bridge CS3’s "Photo Downloader" and successfully connected to and scanned with my A3 USB.

Unfortunately, the problem in Photoshop CS3 exisits, but I’m much happier using Adobe Bridge instead of a third-party shareware/freeware app.

If anyone else is experiencing similar issues in Photoshop, try loading Adobe Bridge and click FILE -> GET PHOTOS FROM CAMERA … In the pop-up window, click "Select a Device" and hopefully your scanner will be listed.

Thanks for the help that others offered above!

MIKE- OMG! Thank You for coming up with, or at least letting out the secret for scanning thru the Adobe Bridge option!!!

this is clearly a CS3 issue … something has been altered since CS2.

Has it not been said somewhere here (could it have been from Chris Cox or Jeff Shewe?) that Photoshop CS3 had "improved memory management" allowing users to access more RAM and other memory benefits over CS2?

Yay!!! That seems to do the trick on my system as well. I’m so happy you figured out a work around. It was driving me nuts. Hopefully the Adobe folks will be able to track down the issue now.

Thanks,
Jenn
