Why is PS CS 3 userinterface so slow?

IĀ“m wondering why PS CS3`s userinterface and screen redraw is so slow compared to CS2. Screen redraw is noticable slower than CS2`s, which already was slower than Cs1`s. Zooming and panning etc. takes more time. Also if I have let`s say 10 pictures open and want to arrange them (tile vertically/horizontally) it takes several seconds until it`s ready. In previous versions that was MUCH faster. Or just drag a picture around in the workspace. It takes 100% CPU usage and still goes very jerky. Or draging any window from the OS over the PS workspace. Screen redraw is very slow then. And it`s not my videodriver or card, because I noticed it on different PCs. The userinterface is just much slower than CS2`s. I only have an AMD Athlon XP2100, but hey, that should be enough to drag around image windows etc. Was no problem with previous versions. I`m just wondering, WHY it is slower. Do I really need a Dual Core and the fastest CPU just to have a fast and responsive UI? Last year Chris Cox wrote in this forum, that the screen redraw of CS2 was slower than previous versions, because the "quality" was better, although I could not tell a difference. So what`s the reason this time? Why is every new CS version slower in terms of UI and screen redraw?

I only have an AMD Athlon XP2100

We really need to know a lot more about your system to be able to help.

How much RAM do you have?
How much is allocated to Photoshop?
How big are the 10 images you have open?
What other apps are running at the same time?
What is your scratch disk arrangement?
How much free space do you have on all your HDs?
Are all your HDs defragemnted?
What is your page file setup?
Have you tried temporarily turning off Hardware Acceleration?

-3 Gigs of RAM
-55% for PS
-even if the files are very small, rearranging them is SLOW, it does not depend on file size at all!
-Only Bridge
-Scratch disk arrangement doesn`t play any role, because the scratch disk is not working only because I drag an image window within the PS workspace
-I have lots of diskspace left
-yes, but that doesn`t matter IMO, because the discs do nothing only because IĀ“m draging image windows.
-yes
The UI is just slow, I saw that on different PCs. All are behaving like mine. That means: much slower than CS2!

Well I’ve just opened ten images in CS3 here (on both my computers) and they tile almost instantly. Certainly in under a second. And there is no jerkyness moving them around.

Have you downloaded the Bridge 2.1 update? I’m sure I read somewhere about a memory leak in Bridge 2.

Or could something else be running in the background and hogging the CPU?

Otherwise it could be a display problem. Yet you say you’ve tried turning off Hardware Acceleration which usually proves this. Would it be worth downloading the latest drivers for your graphics card anyway?

Chris, thanks for your help. I have experienced the jerkyness on various computers (PC). All of them don`t have the latest and greatest CPUs (around 2 Ghz). Maybe your CPU is much faster and so you can`t notice any "slowness". And yes, I Have the latest nvidia driver and Bridge 2.1. I also watch my taskmanager and there`s nothing special working in the background. Hardware acceleration was only turned off temporarily to see wther it`s a driver problem, but is turned on again. On all PCs I noticed that CS2`s UI is faster.

Computer 1: AMD processor, XP Home

Processor speed: 2096 MHz Built-in memory: 959 MB Free memory: 159 MB Memory available to Photoshop: 722 MB Memory used by Photoshop: 55 % Image cache levels: 6

Computer 2: AMD 64 processor, XP Home

Processor speed: 2002 MHz Built-in memory: 2047 MB Free memory: 769 MB Memory available to Photoshop: 1703 MB Memory used by Photoshop: 55 % Image cache levels: 6

On Computer 1, ten files tile in a fraction over 1 second (less than 1.5 seconds.

On Computer 2, they tile in just under one second.

I also tried the same ten files on Computer 2 using CS2. They took a little under 1.5 seconds.

This confirms what I have felt since I installed it, that CS3 is actually faster than CS2.

Sorry!

Thanks for testing, Chris. I just can`t imagine, what the problem on my PC is.

I have just the same problem, and it’s not because of computer performace – i have core2 duo t7400 with 2gb ram. CPU usage is never more than 30-40%, but ps3 works very slowly. Especially UI and actions like file opening, moving windows, etc. Actually it totally SLOW.
I have almost clean Windows Vista and a lot of free disk space. Here is my System Info:

Adobe Photoshop Version: 10.0 (10.0×20070321 [20070321.m.1480 16:39:00 cutoff; m branch]) Operating System: Windows NT
Version: 6.0
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:15, Stepping:6 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2 Physical processor count: 2
Processor speed: 2173 MHz
Built-in memory: 2046 MB
Free memory: 941 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 1671 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 55 %
Image cache levels: 6

Does anyone know what’s the cause of all of this issues?

(I’m not native english speaker, so sorry for that:)

Chris, maybe you could test it once more with ten 20MB files. BTW. what screen resolution do you have? I have 1200/1600/32bit. With lower screenresolution it`s faster, of course.

I also have a very very slow interface. cs2 worked fine, but cs3 is a mess! my latop, which is not that good as my desktop pc runs ps cs3 very well, smooth and quick. The best thing to see this is to open the preferences (CRTL+k) – on my laptop it pops up imediantely and I can drag that window like a normal window but on my pc its horror. The window needs 2 or 3 seconds to come up and when I drag it around I have the feeling this window needs 100 CPU… same thing for most dialogs like save, filters and especially the layer effect dialog – I send most time with waiting šŸ˜› I tried nearly everything what I found on google(changing scratch disks, deactivate hardware accelaration, decrease cache levels, ram for ps). I have no idea anymore. this freaks me out! Maybe my specs can help you to help me (and others of course ;)): PC: Pentium 4 / 3Ghz HT / 1,5 GB Ram / Ati Radeon 9800 Pro 128 mb / enough free diskspace on 3 hds / 972mb (79%) Ram for PS
Laptop: intel centrino 1,7Ghz / 1Gb Ram / Ati mobility radeon 64mb / only 4 gb free disk space / 600 mb ram for PS
Maybe I should mention that I am working on a dual monitor setup – maybe this makes ps goin bad?! thx for responses!

I have noticed the same pokeyness with cs3.I have an athlon with 2 gigs of ram and an x1600. I have been using photoshop for a long time and I noticed right away when using the trial that in almost all respects cs3 is slower than cs2. It launches slower. It bogs my computer down when using large brushes. Liquify chokes on files that cs2 can handle well. It just seems bloated compared to cs2.

I’m seeing (what I think are) the same problems…

Everything works fine on my laptop (new core2duo lenovo tablet w/ 2gb ram)

On my desktop (e6600, 3gb ram, hdd in raid 5, pair of 7600gs) photoshop is insanely laggy. Quite frustrating.

Performance does seem to improve once I’ve left ps open for a few minutes though.
