Brush tip disappears in CS3

This is really frustrating: I am retouching a large number of files and need the brush constantly. But after having worked for a while, the brush tip disappears on the display and changes into a precise cursor (the "cross", not the circle that varies in size depending on the size settings). My setting for the brush tip in preferences is "normal" without the crosshair in it.

Functionally tho, the brush still performs with the settings i use (anything between 5 and 250 pixels brush size, varying hardness between 0 and 98). So the brush still brushes, but I can’t see the edges! This appears to be some interface problem.

The problem is not solved by restarting photoshop. I need to reboot my machine before the brush tip returns and looks the way it should. It doesn’t happen very often, but 3-5 times a day is too much for me.

Did I accidentally press some shortcut key? Anyone have this problem before? Any suggestions welcome.

Hitting Caps Lock again is a quicker solution 😉
