Since Photoshop does not support 64bit processing, it is hit or miss whether it works or not. Some people get it to run fine, many do not and have plenty of crashes.
Well I run Vista Business x64 on a E6400, and have zero problems with CS2 and CS3. I think something is seriously wrong with your system.
I’m having the same problem on Vista Business x64. Constantly getting "not responding" on new document or save a document or well, on just about anything I try to do. Photoshop CS2 runs fine however.
BTW–comment by Michael Brower about it’s hit or miss if it works since Photoshop does not support 64bit seems bogus. I have tons of 32bit programs running fine under Vista 64bit but I’ve had tons of problems running Photoshop CS3 under XP Pro 32bit or Vista 64bit.
What we need is some trouble-shooting direction. I upgraded to Vista 64bit (x64) precisely to be able to run Photoshop CS3 with 4 GB of memory. It’s a shame Photoshop has joined with most other major (monopoly) software companies (namely Microsoft itself) in releasing overly-expensive, bloated, slow, buggy software that doesn’t perform well even on todays top equipment.

If it was working great on XP why did you change?
If you read anything about it, it’s that it’s full of problems and most pre-existing software has difficulty with it.
I have not yet Upgraded to Vista as Yet. But I believe that Clifford is right. Vista is known to have compatability issues with existing software. Which is usual for a new OS. Its sometimes best to wait a few months and let microsoft release a few updates or a patch correcting these issues before upgrading your OS. That way it much more secure.
After all its your work. Can’t afford to have an unstable system doing important work for your clients.
I’m running Vista Business x64, and I can’t even get CS3 to install, period! It hangs immediately and spits out this error message: Setup has encountered an error and cannot continue. Contact Adobe Customer Support for assistance. This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator.
I’ve tried fooling around with the Group Policy Object Editor (all a new experience to me) but to no avail. Please? Anyone?
Vista is known to have compatability issues with existing software.
cs3 was supposedly released specifically FOR vista! no other version of photoshop is supported under it.

My co-worker runs Vista Home Premium (32-bit) on her laptop, and it installed just fine for her. I had been using plain ol’ CS ever since I got Vista, and it’d been rock stable, on both 32 AND my recently installed 64-bit.
I have an XP-based laptop, and my copy of CS3 installs just fine on it.

I performed a fresh install of Vista Business x64 on a spare hard drive, let Windows Update do its thing, installed my drivers, and then tried CS3.
It worked fine.
Guess it’s a software conflict somewhere. Norton? I’m looking at you.
