Variations has disappeared

From which version of Photoshop? Disappeared totally, or is it just greyed out?

It’s still there in CS3 – but not in 16 bit mode of course, which is how it always has been.

Don’t know what you mean by an 8 bit screen.

What’s the difference? Digital images are captured in approximately 12 bit depth. If you bring them into Photoshop in 8 bit mode you have to discard a great deal of colour depth. By opening them in 16 bit mode (for this you have to shoot RAW) there is plenty of room to accomodate the 12 bit depth. So doing enables you to carry out considerably more "destructive" adjustments (such as levels) without impacting too much on image quality.

Shirley,

Make sure Photoshop is closed.

In Windows Explorer, select Tools>Folder Options>View

Under Hidden Files and Folders, make sure that Show Hidden Files and folders is checked and Hide file extensions for known file types is UNCHECKED. Click OK.

Now naviagate through to:

%windir%\Documents and Settings\~username\Application
Data\Adobe\Photoshop\[version #]\Adobe Photoshop [version #] Settings

That will probably translate on your machine to:

c:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application
Data\Adobe\Photoshop\9.0\Adobe Photoshop CS2 Settings

Now delete the Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp file in that folder
