Working on a previously saved image, typically a JPEG 1600x1200x300, if I hit CTRL+S or File>Save, 90% of the time I get a Save As dialog to plod thru. Click OK on the Save As, click OK on the same file dialog, then OK again on level 10 just to do an intermittent save on my work in process. I have no clue why and have checked everything I can think of in preferences. It just drives me nuts. Can someone offer a fix for this issue

Using Gateway/Athlon 3500+ w/3GB Ram & Windows XP Media Center.

Thanks, Gary

Have you added layers or channels or anything that jpeg does not support?

Resaving jpeg files is not advised as they will degrade with every Save.

just to do an intermittent save on my work in process.

To echo what Ed has just said. Jpeg should only ever be used to save a file for its final destination (eg Web) when you know it will not need to be opened and saved again. The destruction to your valuable pixels – even at the highest quality – is cumulative.

Thanks for the replies. I have not added layers or channels and am aware of the hazards of opening and resaving JPEGs.

I’m saving images for my client’s use and they require JPEG files for newspaper ads and web use. Typically what happens is I’ll post process 25 to 35 images saving the files as 1600x1200x300 jpegs. I inspect the post processed files in bridge one last time before I FTP them to my client. If I see a problem, say a dust speck I missed, I’ll open the image, clone the spot and hit CTRL+S and IN MOST INSTANCES it will open the Save As dialog with PSD as the selected file type and force me to go thru multiple steps to resave the image. I’ve switched back to CS2 and the behavior dissappears.

All ideas are appreciated. Thanks again for the replies, Gary

This seems to be another "improved feature" that Abode in its wisdom is foisting on the users.
