Hi,

I’m replacing an older Dell XPS desktop with a new machine, this time from a highly recommended vendor specializing in quiet machines (http://endpcnoise.com <http://endpcnoise.com>). I’d like to ask for your experiences on a couple things.

First, does having a RAID setup significantly improve the performance of Photoshop and Illustrator? I’m currently running CS2, will probably upgrade later this year.

Secondly, anybody have experience with XFX video cards?

Would 2GB of RAM be enough to handle most run-of-the-mill graphic design tasks? I have no problems with 1GB on my Inspiron 9400 notebook.

Any other tips or suggestions welcome.

Thanks for your help.

You’ll notice the RAID improvements with VERY LARGE images. If all you’re doing is web stuff, you’ll never see it.

RAM’s cheap. If you plan on running multiple apps, max it out.

When you say "very large," I assume you mean upwards of 500 MB? It’s rare I work with something like that.

And I think highest RAM choice was 4MB, but a guy there I spoke with on the phone said Windows could only "see 3" if I understood him correctly. What would you recommend?

Windows XP can see all 4GB of RAM and the app will see 3 if you modify the boot.ini. The ‘guy on the phone’ should have known that.

In effect the Operating system will use the top 1 gig leaving ALL the lower 3 gig for apps, as noted above you need to make a small change in one of the file to tell the OS to do this. I also think there was a switch when launching Photoshop as well, anyone remember?

Nope, no switch unique to PS…it will see what the total available RAM and allocate what percentage of that is chosen by the user in the PS preferences.
