I have PS CS2 on a WinXP machine and had a major computer crash. After doing a Windows reinstall I tried to restore CS2 from a backup copy but it won’t run because it didn’t copy with the serial # or user name. I would like to just retype the missing information but I don’t know how to get to the row of boxes where you put the serial # and user name.
Thanks!

Your best bet would simply be to reinstall PS CS2 over itself, entering the serial number and user name as appropriate when prompted. After all, if some data is missing, then who knows what else might also be missing that could cause errant PS behavior. That peronalization info is in the Windows Registry but is not complete (the serial number is only a portion of the full number), so it is best to perform a normal installation and, if prompted for any kind of repair activation, to follow on through that process. If you’ve changed hard drives in the course of resolving your crash issues, then you will have to reactivate anyway, as the PS CS2 activation is tied uniquely to the hard drive and certain information associated with it. Finally, note that if you do have to reactivate PS CS2 and cannot, due to it reporting you’ve used up your allowed activations, you will have to coordinate with Adobe Customer Service by phone for a reset of your activation history.

You’d be better off re-installing Photoshop fron the CDs. IT doesn’t take any longer than restoring the program files from a backup, and avoids problems like the one you’re having, particularly as you’ve done a complete Windows reinstall.
