Adjustment layers: Quality settings for preview

I am experiencing problems with adjustment layers. (CS3)

I have a 16bpc image with a curves adjustment layer. The adjustment layer also has a mask applied, so that only certain parts of the image are affected by the curves.
The problem now is, that the image shows terrible color banding when i view it at zoom levels smaller than 100%. only when i apply the adjustment layer to the background the banding goes away.
is there a way to tweak the quality settings for the adjustment layers preview? it’s really annoying to not get an accurate preview…

The only really accurate viewing is at 100%. Usually you can view in exact percentages of 50, 25, 12.5 percent etc. and not see any on screen artifacts. If you in between at all, then the dithering required to fit the image to the window may indeed cause viewing artifacts that aren’t in the file.

It seems no one was clever enough to answer this one 😉 But since i found out how to solve the problem myself, i add the answer here:

As long as Performance => Cache Levels is set to 2 or higher, banding will occur. If set to 1 there is no banding – but the image will not be anti-aliased, which may lead to other problems…
