My apologies if I’m in the wrong newsgroup with these hardware-related questions.

I would like to build a new computer for a photographer friend who works out of her home. Sometimes she has to manipulate a lot of RAW images at one time.

Assuming she will primarily use Adobe Lightroom and CS3:

1. Are these programs multi-threaded? Will Lightroom benefit from multiple CPUs? Does it use a scratch disk?

2. It appears that Lightroom is a 32-bit program, so Vista 64-bit will not help. Is 4GB of memory sufficient to run Vista, Lightroom, CS3 and plenty of open photos concurrently?

3. What graphics card is best for 2D photography? Her goals are: 1) accurate color matching of monitor to inkjet printed output; 2) the ability to manipulate many photos at once in Lightroom.

4. What Windows color calibration software is recommended?

I was thinking of a Tyan Thunder n3600B S2927 motherboard, dual AMD Opteron 2214 CPUs, 4GB DDR 800 memory, two Raptor 150 hard drives (one as scratch disk) and Windows Vista Business.

I have no idea about the video card, as the nVidia Quadro cards I’ve used are meant for 3D programs like SolidWorks.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Did anyone happen to answer this for you from a different use group? I’m in somewhat of the same boat.
