Hello,

I have a Vista Ultimate x64 computer. It’s a fresh install as of a few weeks ago. I had CS3 running smoothly. My Canon 5D files (16 bit file) took about 5 – 10 seconds to sharpen using Smart Sharpen. Today, I opened up 2 files from ACR into PS. I tried applying the filter, and it all of a sudden is taking 4 – 5 minutes to sharpen. I had this problem before I rebuilt my machine thinking it had something to do with the first build. My scratch disk is on the same disk as the OS, and I have plenty of hard drive space (over 100 GB free). The disk is Raid 0 so it should be plenty fast. Something got hung up in Photoshop. Has anyone else had this problem and been able to resolve it? Can I clear the scratch disk or some sort of cache within PS to fix this?

have you tried resetting the preferences? (instructions are in the faq).

it’s pretty fast for me. and i’ve never seen anything like that. how big (disk size) are the files? same slowdown on other files? tried 8 bit? etc.?

Thank you Dave. That seemed to have worked. The only issue is that the problem returns after about sharpening 6 photos, so I have to delete the preferences file. 8 bit does run faster than 16 bit. It runs slightly faster before the issue starts. It runs 5x faster when the issue starts. This sounds like it might be a bug in PS and Vista x64.

For others that are having this issue, you can delete the preferences file labeled Adobe Photoshop x Prefs.psp. The x refers to your version of Photoshop. In Vista, it is found in Username/App Data/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop x/Adobe Photoshp x Settings.

It’s a pain having to continually delete the file, but for now I can live with it. I’ll post again if I find a better solution.

Download the latest updates. There was talk of a memory leak on one of these forums. It was in Bridge I think. Nevertheless, update and see if it improves things.

The updates were installed a few weeks ago when they became available, so that is not the culprit.

…were installed a few weeks ago…

I had an issue some weeks ago (Error/App needs to close) after the update.

I then reinstalled Ps (no uninstall, so a repair install) and after that the issue was gone while the upgrade seemed still implemented.

Maybe this helps,

Rob
