I am trying to set a default value for most of my drop shadows. How do I to this??

The best way would be to create a new style.
Set your DS to what you want, (mode,angle, spread,colour,etc.,) and hit the New style button.
Give it a name and it will appear in your Style palette. To use/apply it, just click on it.
