Can you describe more completely what is happening? Do you get a type layer? Does it have text that you typed displayed in the layer name? What is the resolution of the file, etc.?
Ed, I get a type layer but there is nothing visible in it, just a small black square. Then when I click on the type layer in the layers palate, typing appears but still can’t be seen. It was working fine yesterday, but all of a sudden has stopped working. The file sizes are quite normal and I have been captioning pictures regularly for a long time.
Reset the Type tool from the fly-out menu.
Read thoroughly, and look the the attached image at the bottom of Len’s reply:

Thanks very much for this tip…reseting the type tool fixed the problem! I will keep the article on reseting preferences on file.
Glad you got it sorted. The settings in the Character Palette can get so far out that, although the type is there, it is not visible.
I’m glad it worked. Every time I see this problem I am curious about the resolution of the file because a very low resolution often causes the problem. But it seems not to have been the case this time.
