Lately when attempting to add text to an image, the text is either so small that it is unreadable, or does not show up at all. I’ve tried zooming way in, and it still doesn’t show up, even though the layer correctly shows my typed text. I’ve been using the same set of fonts for months now, so I know it’s not a country code problem. Anyone know what’s up?

the text is either so small that it is unreadable

This could be related to the resolution of the image into which you are placing your text, have you checked it?

does not show up at all

This may be due to screwed up settings in the Character Palette. Try resetting the tool from the fly-out menu.

If all else fails reset Photoshop preferences as described in the FAQs. <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.ef4a07f/1>

This is almost always a resolution of under 10 in image>image size.

Change to 72 or higher.

I tried all of that before I asked the question. Nothing happened.

You are not using a type color that’s the same as the background by any chance? Or creating a Type Layer underneath an image?

Try using Pixels as Type Size rather than points. How big in comparison to the image?

Did you try trashing/resetting Preferences?

No, give me some credit…The text didn’t show up at all sometimes, and other times I had to make it the biggest possible size for it to even show up.

Ugh, I deleted the preferences, that worked, but I’d still like to know what happened.

Thanks for trying to help, guys.

Anyone know what’s up?

I could tell you what’s up, but I resent your condescending tone.

I’m not being condescending, I actually felt that you were being condescending to me. It’s frustrating to have people assume that you wouldn’t even know to change your text color against an identical background.

And I thanked you all for trying to help me. I was being polite.

It’s not worth spatting about. Believe me, I have seen brilliant, seasoned pros make newbie mistakes, so you just never know.

Sometimes those Preferences files just get corrupted and cause all kinds of little problems.

You have to realize that the suggestions we made are mistakes that are made by many people, and are not a sign that we think you are a moron or something. I’ve done the wrong resolution when opening that dialog and hitting a keypad number and not realizing I just changed the resolution.

And we did tell you how to fix it in the first message, but you refused to try it, didn’t we.

That doesn’t actually fix the problem though. I appreciate the suggestion, it works for the time-being, but it doesn’t solve the fact that the files randomly go corrupt. I’m sorry if I came off rudely, but I make sure to read through the FAQs before I post anything so you *don’t* have to give the same advice over and over again.

If your Preferences files are being corrupted often you should look into possible problems with your system, RAM, hardware , etc. It shouldn’t happen that often. I only have to reset Prefs once in a blue moon.

To make it easy I’ve made a duplicate Prefs file wand whenever I need to trash/reset, I just Copy/Paste it into its place in Documents and Settings. That way I have everything back the way I want it without having to go through changing every setting.

Amanda,

The most usual cause of preferences corruption is switching off the machine before Photoshop has fully closed down.

I only turn off my machine every few days or so…=( Oh well.

just make sure you close photoshop before you restart the machine.

If it’s a laptop, make sure you shut down Photoshop before putting into sleep mode by shutting the cover. If the battery runs down when it’s sleeping, Photoshop gets no chance to close before you reboot.

….and of course automatic Windows updates may reboot the computer if you let them!

I always close out my programs when I’m done with them. But it doesn’t matter, this was my mom’s PC and I ordered a new computer yesterday.

It’s doing it again. Worked fine for a few days, now it’s screwed. And I don’t have a pref file to delete this time. =/ Anyone have any idea??

Every running copy of Photoshop has preferences files even if you didn’t change anything yourself (they are created automatically) . And the preferences can get corrupted without human intervention (just like any other file).

It may be a file or a font that Photoshop doesn’t like.

And I don’t have a pref file to delete this time

Sure you do. You just can’t see it. You probably have the windows default setting that makes hidden files invisible turned on.

If you have had Photoshop running, there will be a preferences file. The program creates one ever time it is correctly closed.

Nah, I probably just didn’t look hard enough, lol.

So, no one knows any other solution besides routinely deleting my preference file? Argh. Well, I ordered a new PC for college, if I transfer my program to that PC, do you think the files will still corrupt, or will the new PC solve the problem?

Something is causing your preferences to go badly. I think improper shut down has been mentioned. Networks might also cause problems. I haven’t had to delete preferences for several years.

A new machine might have fewer problems for you.

I found a solution, since none of these worked for me. Go to Image > Image Size > Change pixels/inch to pixels/cm (drop down menu) and the resolution to 72. It should fix your problem.

Let me know if this works for you, works for me 😛

Jeff. It should also work with pixels per inch at 72. You do need to have the resolution at 72 or higher, though.
