Hey there,

I’ve used photoshop for around 7 years and have never had this problem. I’ve been working on a project and have designed a menu screen in photoshop. When I save to jpg, the colors are completely different. I don’t even know where to start to check settings or troubleshoot given that I have never encountered anything like this before. Any suggestions? The image is linked below. Thanks so much in advance!

You need to ensure your monitor is correctly profiled and convert your image file to sRGB before saving.

Thanks, but I know that isn’t the issue. The color profile is sRGB and the monitor is profiled. I actually just realized that suddenly when I open anything in photoshop it is much darker than the original image, no matter what image file I open. This just started Tues. when I opened photoshop towards the end of the day. Is there someway to adjust photoshop’s actual viewing profile?

Have you tried recalibrating your monitor? The profile could have become corrupted.

Also consider how you are profiling. If you are using a third party device, make sure Adobe Gamma Loader has not somehow become reinstated in the Start menu.

Without knowing more about your PS version, system specs, screen type, etc, it is difficult to be more specific.

I’ll give it a shot. I use Adobe Photoshop CS2 on a DELL laptop – company issued, not sure of the model – dual 19" DELL flat panel screens. When I have an image open in any other program it views just as it always has – with the correct color on both monitors; but when I open it up in Photoshop it shows it to be much darker. I guess I’m wandering if I hit something that caused Photoshop to darken the color display or changed something without realizing it. Everything else displayed on the monitors is the same as its always been.

I will definately recalibrate and then update this thread; thanks so much for bearing with me.

WOOT! You are the man. I don’t know why or how, but for some reason my monitors were set back to the default color display instead of adobe1996. Got it all worked out now, thanks so much.!

Hi Marcus,

I have run into the same problem with CS3 on my T60p machine. So where you change the default color display setting?

Thanks,
John

The Colour Settings are found under the Edit menu. Popular choices for Photoshop’s working space are AdobeRGB1998 and ProPhoto, both wide gamut spaces. If you work exclusively on web graphics/images the lower sRGB space would be sufficient. Most folks would choose the wider gamut and convert to sRGB before saving for web. When sending image files to a lab for printing, you should ascertain their required colour space and convert to that before sending the file.

As for the monitor display profile. You should not use any of the "pre packed" colour spaces. Earlier versions of Photoshop shipped a utility called Adobe Gamma (found in Control Panel) which has a wizard for calibrating the monitor. They stopped shipping it with CS3 largely because it was only really meant for use with CRTs. LCD screens can be adjusted using Adobe Gamma, but accurate results can only be achieved with a third party hardware/software solution.
