It was the contiguous box that, for some reason, was not checked. I don’t know how it managed to get unchecked from the last time I used photoshop..tks… one more email to stuff in my personal help folder 🙂

Some of you might remember this request about 8 weeks ago on a masking question. I kept those threads and yet, re-reading them now I just can’t seem to reproduce what I managed to achieve back then. I’m hoping some
will
help me now.

I am using the custom shape tool to create a frame around an image (lets
say
frame7). To be very explicit, the steps I am taking are:
1. paste picture
2. create frame
3. Position frame
4. select frame and "make selection"
5. select "inverse selection"
6. go to picture layer
7. click on mask tool on the layer palette

In the layer mask thumbnail, I see a black frame against a sea of white.
At this point, I am trying to hide everything outside the frame. Using
the
paint bucket tool tends to wipe out the entire image.

There is one small, but painfully crucial, step that I am missing in all this.
thanks
The Paint Bucket should work. Make sure Contiguous is checked and click on the mask icon to make it active. Click with the Paint Bucket in the area in the image you want masked (transparent). You could also use a brush or pencil in that area.

If you can’t do it and are still struggling with it after all this time, you should consider getting someone to do it for you. I hate to should like the notorious Mike, but sometimes it’s best to hire someone.
