I am noticing that my monitor is not the same color as the photos/images I am having printed at processing places. I’ve been told to calibrate or profile my monitor to match what is being printed. How do I do this or what would you recommend? My film processor said that if I can get my monitor profiled, I’ll be 1/2 way there, and some day I can deal with installing their printing profile as well to be right on. I’d love some help as this is all foreign to me.

Thanks!

what version of photoshop? if pre-cs3, start by running adobe gamma (wizard mode) from the control panel. follow the instructions carefully as you step through the program.

here’s a great read (about 10 mins) as a primer to ps’s color management:

Thanks for the article, I will take a look.

I have CS. I ran the adobe gamma like you suggested, and didn’t notice a difference. However, when I look at my screen from the side (not head on), the colors are more like what is printing…does that make sense? Unless I’m mistaken, my laptop doesn’t have contrast buttons on the keyboard…the only area I noticed the ability to set contrast was in accessibility options. Is there somewhere I’m not looking that’s obvious? I know where the brightness controls are on the keyboard and assumed the others would be near.

Thanks,
Heather

Laptops vary in what controls they offer. My Sony Vaio (which was aimed at the graphics market) allowed me to use Adobe Gamma quite successfully.

yea, my dell laptop (e1505) only allows for brightness adjustment via the Fn key + the up and down arrows. (Fn key functions on laptops are often overprinted on keys next to the normal chars, mine are in blue.)

barring that it looks like you need to look for a 3rd party solution…

google: free monitor calibration software lcd

here’s one that says it does lcd’s:
