I’m trying to use quick mass as a simple means of selection…for specific area sharpening, etc.

I enter the quick mask mode by typing Q.

I open to brush by typing B

I paint the area to be selected and it turns red.

I re-enter RGB once again by typing Q

My problem is that the entire image now becomes selected, nio matter what I do?

The paramters which I’m using are:

I’m using Quick Mask in NORMAL Mode, Opacity 100%, Flow 40%, Master Diamter of 54 and a hardness of 40.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance….

Hi Jim,
By default, the red color in the Quick Mask mode means masked area. So, when you return to the standard editing mode, all the image except for the "red" areas is selected.

To make the color indicate selected areas, double-click the Quick Mask button (on the Toolbox) and choose "Selected Areas" in the "Quick Mask Options" dialog.

I guess I need to be a bit more precise 🙂

The issue is:

A) I "paint" the area to be selected.

B) I press Q as a shortcut to retun to RGB mode whereby I’d expect to see my selection outlined with the proverbial marching ants.

C) The issue is, no matter wehat I do, the ENTIRE IMAGE is selected (including my painted area and the painted area doesn’t show up) and the marching ants are around the perimter of the entire image and have nothing to do with the area I selected by paining ?

B) is B ) (without the space) in disguise!

Try with the Flow set to 100% and a slightly lower hardness setting.

I’ve done it with flow set to 100, and a harness anywhere from 70 down to 0…the same thing happens every time.

My work flow is as follows:

Press Q to enter quick Mask

Press B to bring up the brush tool.

Paint selection (turns red as it should)

Press Q to re-enter RGB mode

The red delection goes away and marching ants appear around the entire perimeter of the image and not around the area I just selected.

Just to check the invert, I invoke control, shift, i…and the entire image becomes red????????????????????????????????????????

Just to be sure, does the same thing happen if you exit quickmask by clicking on the icon in the toolbox?

Something’s particularly weird here, because when you have marching ants surrounding the entire image and do Ctrl+Shift+I you shouldn’t get red as in QM, you should get the inverse of the full-screen marching ants.

Jim, have you tried deleting your preferences, per the FAQ?
