When I open a DNG file in PS, the file file jumps from 10 MB to 57.5 MB. During processing the file size increases dramatically.

What do you suggest to maintain the highest quality with the lowest file size?

Reducing the Image Size, converting to 8 bit and flattening the image gives a small file size, but resolution, color, and ability to edit suffer. Perhaps you have a compromise for achieving the best balance among these factors, or another approach.

The 10 meg size is the compressed file and opening it uncompresses it to the full size. if you have layers,then yes the size will increase,but flattening at the end will get it back to 57 megs. you could always save as a jpg if your space is limited,but i would suggest buying more external storage and not sacrifice quality to save the space. i always save as a tiff and my files are exactly like you mention. i have two external 250g drives for photos. depends how critical you are with your results
