Hope someone here can help with this –

When I install the buZZ 3 Pro plugin into CS3 with User Account Control switched off and run it in that mode, buZZ works fine. But when I restore the UAC, I get an error message shortly after buZZ begins its work to say "buZZ error – cannot save to DAT file".

Alternatively, if I open CS3 (with buZZ installed), running as Administrator, buZZ works fine. If I close CS3 and reopen without running it as an Administrator, buZZ shows the problem again.

The infuriating thing is that I had buZZ working ok under CS3 and Vista up until a hardware upgrade forced a clean install of everything.

I know it’s a bit wide of a CS3 issue but I’d be really grateful for some advice on this, please.

Thanks

David

From your description it requires permissions you don’t have with UAC on…

David,

I’m always running as Administrator, but also with UAC usually disabled. I’m not home where I can try anything out on Vista, but if I remember correctly, you have an option in the file properties of executables to always run them as an Administrator. Whether the same properties exist for plug-in files, I don’t know but it may be worth a look and trying. Also, you might explore running them in Windows XP compatibility mode…the plug-ins, not PS itself. Windows XP doesn’t who a compatibility mode option available for 8BF files, so Vista probably won’t either. I’m just tossing out ideas to explore.

Another idea regards the DAT file, if you can determine where it is located. If you find it and it is unique to your Buzz installation, try opening the file properties and examine both the permissions and the owner properties. I’d ensure permissions are set to full control for Everyone and if the owner is Trusted Installer, perhaps try changing that to Administrators, which should be one of the available choices to you.

Good luck,

Daryl

Thanks very much for your replies. The answer turned out to be a permutation of the UAC on and off that I hadn’t tried before. Basically:

– Install buZZ with UAC on but don’t try to use it (because this brings up a request for a serial number and if you install the serial code with UAC on it will not stick and you will be asked to give it again the next time you open buZZ).

– with PS open, switch off UAC (in the Control Panel) and restart

– open PS and apply buZZ. Enter the serial code for buZZ…BUT DO NOT close PS; instead go to Control Panel/UAC and turn UAC back on. Restart (when requested) immediately (ie without closing buZZ or Photoshop);

– after restart open PS and buZZ normally and it works ok with no error messages.

– this also worked for me for reluctant program registrations under Vista

I don’t know why this works but am just pleased it does.
