IPTC in raw files when opened

I want to automate a workflow using raw files passed to a PS droplet. I have found, however, that whenever I send raw files to ACR and then open them in in PS , the embedded IPTC information is not retained and won’t be included in a new version of the file saved from PS.

I have .xmp sidecar files with the IPTC imported into them , but PS doesn’t seen to use that either.

If I save the raw files directly from ACR then the IPTC info is retained in the new version.

What do you have to do to get IPTC in raw files recognized when opened in PS ? I need the IPTC info in the files I want to droplet but they need to be processed in PS, and that requires opening them in PS.

I could do the intermediate step of creating files saved directly from ACR (so that IPTC is retained) and then sending the intermediate files to the droplet , but that seems like it shouldn’t be necessary.

Is this something that PS can’t do?

Thanks,
Joe.

What steps are carried out by the droplet?

I probably shouldn’t have mentioned the droplet as it is not the issue. The problem is that Photoshop won’t recognize IPTC information embedded in raw files when they are ‘Open’ed in PS from Camera Raw. This is true whether you open from a droplet or directly within photoshop.

ACR will pass along IPTC information to versions saved directly from ACR (using ‘Save Images’ ), but using ‘Open’ in ACR to pass the images to PS (this is what the droplet will have to do) causes IPTC to be lost.

In order to process raw images in Photoshop and get my IPTC information passed along , I have to first save a version from ACR and then pass those intermediate versions to PS for processing ( and then delete the intermediate versions).

Just seems silly.

Okay Joe.

I use Lightroom mainly for opening files into Photoshop for editing. However, I’ve just tried now with a RAW file. In ACR, I selected "Open" and with the image open in PS did Edit>File Info.

All the IPTC info is present, in all four areas: Contact, Image, Content and Status.

Maybe prefs have become corrupted? Try resetting them as detailed in the FAQs, but do the same for Bridge as well. Make sure you get the confirmation dialogue which confirms you hit the three keys at just the right time.

I believe if you open the file as a smart object, the IPTC data is gone. This is perhaps what is going on here. It would be nice to have this changed in the future.

Thanks for the responses. After some more experimenting I can see that Photoshop does see the IPTC info in certain circumstances. The problem is in how the IPTC/XMP info is stored and transmitted to PS. I will have to keep working with my image managing program to figure out what is going on.
