I’m looking for a book that goes into detail on use of the filters with examples of different settings, how to get great arty pictures, etc (tho it seems like all the artistic filters give really great results; I’d just like more control).

I use photoshop CS2 and XP.

thanks,
Judy

No books dedicated to the subject of crafting art from plugins or filters, though you may find brief mentions of same in various Photoshop books.

You’ll have more luck learning about this type of thing from forums like these: * <http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/photo-based-art/> * <http://www.innographx.com/forum/>

If you haven’t yet, look into:
* The Paint Engine plugin — <http://www.FantasticMachines.com> (still free, I believe) * The Impressionist plugin — <http://www.Trimoon.com> (click Downloads). Like the Filter menu on steroids.

Hope this gets you started.

O’Reilly publishes (IMO) a great series of PS books – you might find this or one of the other titles interesting and helpful. I’ve seen all of them out in the bigger bookstores, but typically available for a lower price online.

Photoshop Filter Effects Encyclopedia <http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/photofilterfx/#top>

Photoshop Fine Art Effects Cookbook
Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook
Photoshop Photo Effects Cookbook
Photoshop Retouching Cookbook

I stand corrected. I’d forgotten about the O’Reilly set (good call, Leslie). I bought all but the last one mentioned and then sold each shortly afterwards because the content didn’t break any new ground for me. But for a rookie there would be a lot of eye opening info.

Leslie’s suggestion to surf online sites to save $ on purchase is a good one, too.

(Reposted from early this morning, since the Forum fell down and went boom and the info disappeared…)

O’Reilly publishes a (IMO) great series of PS books that you might find informative and useful. Check this one first: Photoshop Filter Effects Encyclopedia <http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/photofilterfx/>.

Others in the series:

Photoshop Fine Art Effects Cookbook
Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook
Photoshop Photo Effects Cookbook
Photoshop Retouching Cookbook

They seem to be readily available out in the meatspace bookstores, and typically can be found online less expensively.

There is no single book that I know of that will give you what you want. However, there are the following options that when combined come as close as you are going to get.

Photoshop Filter Effects Encylopedia
Roger Pring
O’Reilly
0-596-10021-3
$29.95

Photoshop Effects Cookbook
Tim Shelbourne
O’Reilly
0-596-10022-1
$29.95

Photoshop Fine Art Effects Cookbook
John Beardsworth
O’Reilly
0-596-10062-0
$29.99

And, one that has nothing to do with filters, but is a must have…

Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers John Beardsworth
O’Reilly
0-596-10020-5
$29.95

The first one the encyclopedia is probably the closest to something on filters. The others have a lot of filter material in them but are not filter specific. The blending modes one is just a great resource for information on the Photoshop blending modes and creative ways of using them.

Neither of which have a whole lot to do with the filters in Photoshop. Both have to do with color correcting and exposure correcting your images with some other things thrown in. But, for books on dealing with Photoshops filters they aren’t even books I would think about for that. Though for the color and exposure correction they are both very good. I like th Welcome to Oz book a great deal.
