im using a computer i got from my school which did a fresh install of everything, XP Pro Sp2.

was just trying to findout the default way of file organization, like for example when i goto File > Open > and it shows me a list of files, i was wondering, what is the default order line up? as far as xp goes, does it sort by type or does it sort by name? that way i can atleast reset it to its original settings as opening documents sometimes they get scattered and trying to create a hassle free for organizational purposes.

for example: opening up PSCS2 i choose file>open>my project folder, it has JPEGS, PSD, PDFs, Illustrator files etc, now…is default for windows that it sorts by TYPE so it goes PSD, Illustrator, Jpg etc and it alphabetizes the ‘types’ that way? or does it default to sort by NAME so it just shows each alphabetically and if a PSd is 001 and a illustrator is 002 it will go PSD 001, illustrator 002 or is it

dont mean to make it complicated or anything but its the FIRST time ive ever ran into this. so im just a little concerned i guess ive had my fair share of computer spooks this past year so any help is beneficial.

here are some visual references:

when i open up my project folder this is what it looks like: <http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/6343/001dn0.jpg>

or should it look like this by default:

thanks in advanced for the help!

maybe my last post didnt make too much sense.

lets see if can create a better description.

for example using Windows Media Player 11
Should it by default order the movies and songs by the TYPE they are such as Aiff, Mp3, Mp4, Wav // MPEG, AV, WMV, etc

OR should it order it by name regardless of Filetype?

as i wasnt sure if it should by default have them sorted by TYPE [which then alphabetizes the TYPE by NAme so, for example all MP3’s 0-9,a-zl; then next type 0-9, a-z etc etc.]
or is it defaulted to sorted by Name?

thanks alot sorry for any confusion i appreciate all the assistance.

Why not use Bridge (which ships with CS2) to organize your files?

The files are actually located on the hard drive in a completely random way. You can organise them into folders and sub-folders; this is then reflected in an index record. How they appear within each folder (they don’t actually move) is determined by you by clicking on the column header in "Details" view in Windows Explorer. You can sort ascending or descending, by name, file type, date size, etc. and make your own folder structure to accommodate the way you work.

There is no "right way" – it’s a matter of personal preference.

File > Open and sees their PSd/Jpegs/Misc Files is it like the first or second one?

Mine looks like I set it, and the default view is different for each folder. On the other hand Windows has an annoying habit of forgetting things sometimes or changing after a Windows Update patch.

How you view your files isn’t going to affect the functioning of the computer so just set it how you like it!

And, as Chris said, for image files Bridge has a lot of fancy features.

iirc, the default view in explorer is "Tiles" sorted by name, no extensions, no hidden or system files shown.

in the open dialogs it defaults to name before any changes.

in your image they’re sorted by name with extentions hidden in explorer.

Just a note but I’d advise using the adobe dialogues in photoshop etc as there are a couple of features such as version cue you cant access easily through the OS default ones.
