I have a job to restore about 150 old photos for publication. I can handle the usual tears and spots. Some of the photos are in pretty good shape, but many have surface damage like mud cracks.

I have tried the speckle and dust filter along with the history brush and also the clone stamp. The stamp works better, but it is really very time consuming. Neither technique is totally satisfying.

I bought today a Microtek scanner with ICE restoration software. So far those results are very disappointing. I might return the scanner.

Are there any books or tutorials that could give some other techniques to try?

Thanks.

Katrin Eismann’s books on restoration are worth looking into. <http://www.photoshopdiva.com/books.html>

And don’t expect magic results, from any software or hardware. It takes study, practice and diligence.

As Phos says plus a decent compsoite skill of using all the resources at your disposal.

Once you have completed one you can transfer those skills to the others but, if my own experience is anything to go by (and i am not claiming it is), once you have made a start you will learn and develop skills that will help with the others.

OT: well JJ.

I looked at a link (404 ?) but the Wells stuff looks interesting and recall spending quite a few memorial visits to Brancaster(s) of one form an another.

There is an awesome history there (1918+ and the effect on local communities).
