Hi,
I’m working through a tutorial ( Cover tutorial, Computer Arts Magazine August 2003 ), and am having some problems using paths.
I have imported a line drawing from illustrator, using paste as paths from the paste menu. The line art contains multiple closed paths. The tutorial (page 26, step 28 for those who are interested!) instructs me to select several inner areas of the path (in effect, individual closed paths) using the direct selection tool. Once I have several paths selected, click Load Path As a Selection in the paths palette. Here, I expect the resulting selection marquee to only appear around the previously selected paths, but it doesn’t and selects the entire path, containing many other paths I don’t need. I can’t see how to complete this step by using the resulting selection I currently have, and am wondering whether I have an something in PS set wrong that the magazine assumes is correct.

Can anyone help? I have included the tutorial’s instructions below, so you can see for yourself. If, by any chance, you have read, or even better, completed this tutorial, then I’d love to hear from you!

Thanks in advance,
Simon

28. Use the direct selection tool to select an inner area of your path. Hold down Shift and click on some more inner areas. Now click on the Load Path As a Selection button in the Paths palette. Create a new Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. Change the Hue to +13 and the layer Blending mode to Overlay. Duplicate the layer and change the mode to Normal.

Check the far right side options for the pen tool…depending on what the tutorial is trying to accomplish, you may not have the right option selected.

To change the options for an existing path, select all points in the path with the pen tool, the flip through those 4 options until the pen tool is responding the proper way.
