I am using Photoshop CS3 for checking color density and settings of advertisements sent to me for publication. When I open the pdf in Photoshop, I check the color settings to make sure they are as stipulated by the pre-press coordinator. The Import pdf box says CMYK. Once it is opened, when I use the eye dropper tool to check for color density, it says all my previously 100% black text is CMYK. Am I missing something here? Why is it converting it?
I do thiis all the time and I’ve never had that happen. I always get the exact CMYK values that have been spec’d both in the Quark or ID document and in the Ps document. The first place I would check would be to make sure that there were no conversions taking place in Distiller when you made the pdf. Under the Color Management tab in Distiller, make sure that you’ve chosen the "leave color unchanged" option, which, I’m pretty sure is not checked by default. You can also double check yourself by saving the page as an eps and rasterizing that into Ps as CMYK.
What program are you using to create the final document? If you’re using InDesign, just place the PDFs and use the separation preview there to check your ads.

I am not using Acrobat Pro as I have less knowledge in that program than I do in Photoshop. I checked the distiller and it is set up correctly. Some of the ads come in with 100% black and others come in as CMYK. Forgive my ignorance, as my designer is out of commission and I have a deadline. The book is only half done and I am trying to get the rest of the ads ready for placement. For the ads that are coming in as CMYK, is there any easy way to change the text to 100% black or is this as complicated as it seems?
Thank you for your replies.
I do not know how to preview in separation mode. Is it called something else?
