I have a friend who is being offered a full time position as a web designer. She is currently a temp getting paid $32.00 an hour. In her position she creates online flash animations and design, as well as web design in Dreamweaver. She is creating original cartoon characters, and the company gets to keep the rights. She is also coming up with the themes and all the creative ideas that will go on the web. She will be learning more as time goes on, like some back end programming, and more scripting. She will be responsible for all the elements that go online. She will be creating several websites for this company, and maybe e-cards and games.

However, she will NOT be excepting the company benefits, since she already is covered. She will have to wait a year for a 401k plan to kick. And the company will only match up to 3% of what she puts into it. She will only get one week vacation, two sick days, and six holiday days.

Given all this information, how much salary do you think my friend should accept if she is hired full time. I remind you, she will not be excepting medical benefits! How much does the average medical coverage cost per year?

This person has been out of a full time job for three YEARS!!! Sure, she had a few small freelance gigs here and there, but nothing that kept steady income.

The company said the highest they would go was $50,000 a year. I think that is really bad considering she won’t be getting any benefits.

No benefits? What do you call vacation, holidays, and 401K? Earning $50,000 a year ain’t too bad. You should take the job (yeah, I now you’re pretending it ain’t you) at $40,000 and tell them to throw in medical. Sounds like a great job to me.

If you prove your worth, you can up the vacation to two weeks, maybe three if one is a "working vacation". Web designers don’t have to be on site to code and upload a web page.

Here in Denmark, where the marginal tax is 63%, sales tax 25% etc, and health care is free, newbies will get maybe $30.000/year at the current exchange rate, and $25.000 at last years exchange rates. But again, here we work 37 hours/week, and get 6 weeks of holiday (one of these can be converted to money if you don’t use it).

I would also say: Take the job. It is easier to find a new job if you are already working.

Or find another job, which is easier if you are already working.

Socialism is very expensive. That wouldn’t be so bad except you get so little for what you pay….

We get a good military force and military influence in probably just as many countries as the US. Mostly peacekeeping, but also special forces ops, a strong Air Force – as the first outside USA able to deliver GPS guided bombs,

Free schools, including university. Money for students while they study to minimize their debts when they finish. Good free health system, good public transportation, and overalll good infrastructure.

I think we get pretty much for our money, and people do have plenty of money.

That which you pay for is not free.

Money for students while they study to minimize their debts when they finish.

The government steals your money and gives it to people who haven’t earned it. That’s a good thing?

Good free health system, good public transportation, and overalll good infrastructure.

I have great health care and great private transportation. For less than you pay for "free" and almost "free".

Socialism is very expensive. The expensive comes from the "middleman", which is the government. Being someone who works in government, I know firsthand that government is not capable of being cost effective. A favorite joke here is that we spend millions of dollars each year on cost effectiveness. This joke started after we paid a print service $800,000 to create and print posters to go on area bulletin boards urging employees to be cost effective and that was a Œlow bidder¹! The next year, we cut costs by laying off almost 300 employees. If you pay directly for what you are getting, you lose the cost that the government adds.

Want another example? We had one of those cheap fax machines you can give for about $100. Once day, it died. Was asked for another. Did we get another $100 fax machine. Hell no. We got one of those huge machines that prints like a laser printer and holds 1000 sheets of paper even though we recieve an average of 23 faxed a month – that’s another thing it does. It keeps track of how many faxes have been sent and received. We don’t need another of that. A $100 fax machine that nother but send and receive did all we needed, but it was replaced by a $3000 fax machine. We were told that the $100 fax machine did not meet the "specifications" that we required. Funny it was fine when we had it.

If that doesn’t sway you, then consider two friends I have who are both victims a macular degeneration:

David lives here in the US. He has the same great medical plan that I have. He went through a treatment once a month. Sometimes, the day after the treatment, his vision would be blurred. He would call the doctor and would be told to come to the immediately. The treatment he is going through is a normal treatment that is covered under the normal terms of the healthcare plan.

Ray lives in London, England. He is undergoing the same treatment as David, but had to practically beg for it as it is seen as ³experimental² by the UK¹s socialist ³health care² system. On those occasions he has blurred vision after treatment, if he calls the doctor he is told that his next appointment is not until next month.

Ray pays more (through high taxes) and gets less than David. Though neither has hope of not eventually going completely blind, David has a greater chance of keeping his vision longer than does Ray.

If you insist on relying on socialized medicine, pray that you never get an illness that is not approved by your government.
