I’ve been using Photoshop for about ten years now, so I like to believe that I’m not just an idiot, but bare with me if this ends up to be a stupid question.
I’ve been using the same version of PS7 on the same computer for many years now, but suddenly, one way or another something has changed. Within the layers palette, I used to use the standard ctrl+click to select multiple layers to merge as I see fit. However, now when I hold ctrl over a layer in the palette the cursor turns into a pointing hand with a small rectangular marquee icon in the lower right. If I click a layer it selects all content within the layer. Not the entire workspace like ctrl+a, just all of the content (circle on a transparent background, would only select circle, fully black background, would select entire work space).
I’ve scoured my preferences and actions and shortcut keys trying to figure out how it suddenly got changed and how to fix it, but I have no idea! Any suggestions?

No, you could never select multiple layers in 7. What you can do is hit the little box next to the eyeball and link the layers, and Merge. Or you can Merge Visible.
