Hi

Been given a PSD file which has one layer called background. The image contains a basicbackgound of black with a picture in the middle.

I want to crop the picture into a second layer so that I can alter the backgound without altering the picture.

I draw the crop line and double click but it opens the cropped area as a new image.

Hope I’ve explained this ok and would appreciate a hint

cheers

Ian

You should know from your IT background that accurate terminology is vital in describing software functions.

You select what you refer to as "the picture" – cropping is something else. Once you have a selection (shown by marching ants), press Ctrl+J and the selection will appear on a new layer. You can then modify the background layer leaving the new layer intact.

This and your previous questions indicate that you have not spent much time in that bunch of resources under the "F1" key; nor have you delved much into the manual.

It pays to do a bit of familiarisation before you come in here with questions. Photoshop is not intuitive.

Layer > New > Layer via Copy (Ctrl+J), or via Cut (Shift+Ctrl+J).

Hi

Thanks

I’m beginning to wonder if I’m looking at the same help file as everone else. My copy came with the web premium suite which came with no manual and the f1 help seems to relate to every program in the suite. So if I search in the help for Shift+Ctrl+J which I now know is valid my help file tells me no topics found.

Yes I agree photshop is not intuative but I think I may have to purchase a manual to get me on the right track

thanks again

Ian

It’s better to start from the most general term, in this case "Layers", and drill down from there.

…. or "Keyboard"
