I have a custom-built pc with Windows XP Prof and many gigs of ram, and am using PS 9.0.2. (Will be upgrading after new computer is built.)

I have 400 photos shot as High Quality nefs that I converted to tifs and am editing them in PS as such. They will go to a customer for a website, and I’ll be using the Save for Web feature in PS.

Q: when do I sharpen them? As tifs before the conversion to jpegs or as jpegs after their conversion? Underlying my q, is the understanding that every time one saves a jpeg photo, some quality is lost.

FYI, There are four useful sharpening formulas on pp. 120-125 of Scott Kelby’s Photo-Retouching Secrets.

Best & thanks,
Nancy

Always sharpen at the finished size.

By far the quickest way is to use Image Processor to size the images, set Jpeg quality and convert to sRGB all at the same time. You can also instruct IP to run an action, so create a new action to sharpen using Unsharp Mask by running it on a similar sized image.

In anticipation of doing 3 mass actions–i.e., inserting copyright, converting to jpeg, and sharpening–is it advisable for me to put all 400 tif files in one folder?

As I have them now, they are in separate daily folders so labeled, but that need not be. They are numbered consecutively.

Thanks,
Nancy
