I am a new user to Photoshop 7.0 using windows. I need to be able to "crop" an image tight so when I import it into another program I don’t get the white box around it. For instance, I want to insert an image of a bottle, but only the bottle.

Problem, I don’t know the correct term for this process to even find a solution via "help".

Debra, look up a tutorial on "masking" which should help you with the details of cropping out a specific portion of an image.
The file type you save it as will be determined by the program you are placing the image in. For example, if placing in ID you can leave as a PS file with transparent portions. If placing in MS Word you’d need to explore other file types, such as wmf, and if placing into web program you’d need a transparent gif etc.

Lesson # 1:
"Cropping", by definition, ALWAYS means that you will be removing one or more edges of an image, and the result will ALWAYS be a smaller rectangular image.

What you want to do is Mask, Extract, or Clip. And the image format you want to Save As must support transparency. JPEG, for example, doesn’t support transparency, so you will always be left with a rectangular background around the extracted or masked element you want to isolate.

For just about everything you need to know regarding masking, extraction etc. check the following thread, and follow the links to the tutorials:

Debra

I do this daily. I use the pen, create a path around the object, delete the background and save a clipping path. When I place the tiff file into InDesign, for example, with the clipping path there is NO WHITE BOX.

It would REALLY help to know what the destination program is going to be for the image.
