I have a JPEG and two GIF files that were generated from a PSD file. I need to make some changes to the PSD file and then regenerate the JPEG and GIF files. The person who generated the original JPEG and GIF files is not available, so I have no idea what settings he used when he saved those files. Is there any way to tell directly from the JPEG and GIF files what settings were used?

I’m using Win XP Pro and Photoshop CS2.

GIF is fairly easy. When you open it the file is pretty much identical to what was saved. The main setting is number of colors, and type of palette. If you stay in indexed mode, then you will be OK.

JPG is harder. You will lose quality starting from a JPG and saving to a JPG. I would minimize this by using the highest quality available (although this might leave a larger file than the original). You can’t tell what the original quality was, and you can’t get back to it without the source file.

Don,

Thank you for your reply.

I am going to be making my changes to the PSD file. Then I want to Save As from the PSD to JPEG and from the PSD to GIF. If possible, I would like the settings I choose for saving the JPEG and for saving the GIF files to be the same as were used when the previous JPEG and GIF files were saved. Since the person that saved the previous files is not available, I was hoping there was some way of telling what the settings were from the previous JPEG and GIF files themselves. Is this possible?
