I have a white flower on a black background. If I just choose to brighten the image, the background gets lighter as well. Is there a way that I can just brighten the white flower without affecting the dark background? Thanks.

yes. make a selection on the area you want to brighten (in effect, masking out the parts you want to leave alone) then do your manipulation.

I did something similar with this, only instead of brightening, i blurred the background a bit…

What tools did you use to mask the area that you want to manipulate? Because this flower is very spikey, using the magic wand or lasso tool would be a lot of work. I was wondering if I could brighten the white spectrum by manipulating the hue somehow. I know you can do it with RGB, but I haven’t seen a way to just manipulate white shades. Nice job on the rose though. Thanks.

You could also just do a curves layer or dupe layer on multiply mode and simply paint in the area you want brightened without bothering with a selection. might take time to brush in every spot, but it can go quick sometimes.

Post the image so we can see what you have.

It’s been a while, but it wasn’t difficult… I probably used the lasso to get the basic shape, then the quick mask with a med-soft tipped brush to smooth out the selection. then i inverted the selection and applied a blur to the background.

Nice job on the rose though.

thanks! learned everything about PS from the real pros here in this forum! just trying to pay it forward. 🙂

By the way, that rose would be an ideal solution now for the new Quick Selection Tool in CS3.
