I have captioned a number of photos with the batch/actions command, but run into a block trying to add a logo to the caption…keep getting the message that the move command isn’t accepted. I know there is a way. What am I overlooking.

Hard to say without knowing exactly what the action does, step by step.

My guess would be that you are not on the correct layer when you are trying to move your logo.

If that’s the case, a nifty trick is to incorporate the following into your action.

Be on the layer with the logo. Start recording: Select|All; Layer|Align Layer to Selction<left or right etc.); Layer|Align Layer to Selction<top or bottom, etc.)

Peace,

My action opens a picture file, sets it size to 4×5.25,then changes the canvas size to 4×6. I then add text to the 4x.75 bottom so that my event pictures are captioned. This works just fine as is. What I need is to add my logo and another one as well, and have experimented several ways without luck. As I indicated I can do this outside of the action command.I don’t know if I can record an action from the logo layer and get what I need but I’ll try. I’ll see whatever feedback I hear from others.

Yes, you can.

If your "logo" is text only, do this:

Start recording: Click on text tool, click in middle of image, type your text. Add any stylizing you like, and confirm it. Then run the alignment steps I outlined in the previous post.

Done and done.

The logos are jpeg images.I have to open both the logo file and the picture file at the same time to access the logos, and this is where I run into the problem trying to capture the logo.

Ah, more difficult then.

You have to use the contents of the clipboard in your action. So open the logo, Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C.

Then in your action record the pasting of your logo, then do the alignment routine I posted earlier.

It’s the only way really.

I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong in following your info. I have an action: Open (picture)
Open (logo)
Set selection (to highlight logo)
Cut (logo)
Select previous (to highlight picture)
Paste (shows logo onto picture)
Save
close
But I keep getting the message when I active the batch "previous document not available" and the logo isn’t recorded. I have tried this both with the picture itself as well as with the text message added.I just can’t seem to get beyond this. There is another program referred to called Picture Shark that can set one logo, but I haven’t figured out yet how to place a second logo with it. I think I would prefer to work withing Photoshop 7 but am really lost. What more can you suggest.

Okay George. Here’s the story.

The way you are trying to do it depends on "Previous" and "Next". It’s messy, as you’ve discovered.

An easier way would be to first, eliminate the Open portion of your action. Open your images manually, or use the Batch dialog to control what images will have the action applied.

Here’s what I would do for individual files or for batching.

Open your logo. Copy whatever you will want to paste, into the clipboard.

Open a single image, then start recording:
Edit|Paste; and optional alignment commands. Stop recording.

You may want to include a Save As sequence for your action, but that’s another step away from where you are now so let’s get this one done first.

Any time you want to run that action, it will paste whatever is in clipboard. So you must "prepare" for running that action by opening your logo and copying it to clipboard before running your action, even if you are batching it.

Peace,
Tony

Open logo do a Select All followed by Copy.
Your logo sits now on the Clipboard.
Start the action.
Open one picture, past the logo and position it.
Save the picture.
Go to batch: make sure you choose the same folder for Origen and Destination. Hit OK.

Norberts post is exactly what I posted… <shrug>

Go to batch: make sure you choose the same folder for Origen and Destination.

Only if you want them the same. I always choose a different destination for backup and safety purposes – personal choice I suppose.

You are absolutely right.
Saving to a different folder and closing the picture in the action without saving is the way to do it.

It’s easy when you know how. Thanks to you and Norbert. My action does both this and captioning as well. Now I have just one more challange…putting two logos on. Don’t know if the clipboard will work with two at once. One other alternative I can think of it to combine two logos on one file in this same manner, and then using that file as the clipboard for the pic. Does this make sense or can you suggest something else. The end result of what I want is a picture captioned with text and two different logos on either side of the text.

George,

Don’t know if the clipboard will work with two at once

No. You would have to process images in two discrete sets: clipboard image one, then clipboard image 2.

One other alternative I can think of it to combine two logos on one file in this same manner

Great workaround. That’d work.

The end result of what I want is a picture captioned with text and two different logos on either side of the text.

The issue here is the term "logo" – are they both really graphics? If there is text involved, real vector text, then you can incorporate "typing" into your action.

But if your logo(s) are graphics, then you are relegated to the clipboard method.

Peace,
Tony

The logos are both graphics, and Actions cannot work with more than one on the clipboard. The answer is as suggested….I’ll put both on the same file. This is simple enough. Thanks again for all the feedback. I really appreciate all the help that’s out there.

Open logo one: Do a Select All, Copy and close. Past the logo, position it and open the second logo and do the same.
