I have a set of photoshop images which are in true color. I converted them to 256 color custom palette. The images had semi-transparency in them, but the palette doesn’t, so the images are now fully opaque. How do I introduce a transparency value (alpha) into the color table. For now I just need the same value of transparency for all the colors. Thanks in advance for any sort of help on this.

This is not really doable.

If your image is destined for the web, you may select one color to be transparent, and you could get a not very pretty overall transparent effect by covering your image with a pattern drawn in the transparent color.

Another choice for the web would be to use a PNG image, which supports a true alpha mask. The problem is not all browsers support PNG, though I believe Netscape and Explorer do.
