I am looking for a smooth cut betwwen the blacks and the whites,
Thats what grey scale will do for you, you could try vector tracing it, or redrawing it in a vector package.
Rob,
The solution doesn’t lie in making it B/W. Black and White is basically 1’s and 0’s – black or white, and that won’t solve jaggies.
In order to help, really, you ‘d have to explain what you are doing, how you’re trying to do it, and the intent of the image (web, print, etc.). You might consider posting the image on the web somewhere and tell us the link so you can get better (or at least broader) advice.
What TDO was saying is that if you need it crisp, vector is ONE way to do it (and a very good way), but depending on the image and its intent, it may not be practical.
So give us more information like – are you scanning it in? Where is the ‘artifact’ showing up – web pages or in photoshop or in print or what?
If you can give us more info, you’ll probably get better help.
Peace,
Tony
Image>Adjustments>Posterize ?
I was thinking posterize as well. I’m not sure if it works with grayscale images. If not, change the mode to RGB, posterize, and then change back to grayscale.
as always … you guys are the best. the amount of stuff i learn here is incredible. Thank you all. I would like to post the image (that is intended for printing) but I do not have a web page … 🙁 .
But i’ll try and work something out.
Thanks again.
Works fine in greyscale, Don.
I sometimes use it for creating complex mask which can then be loaded into the alpha of a colour version…

Now that I know what this is about, Len’s suggestion works great.
yup, i tried the posterize effect and it does work, in my particular case it worsen things but that’s another thing (I guess i was hoping a better result).
Thanks again for your support !
Play with the number of levels in posterize – I did that and found some pretty acceptable results.
