Pshop 6 won’t network; Pshop 7 will?

This is an odd problem. I’m running Photoshop 6 on Win2K. I open a tiff file on our network, edit, but it won’t save. I get the following message:

Could not save "S:\…\Z-FFT-10005AE.tif" because the file is locked. Use the ‘Properties’ command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file.

Now, on the surface, it would appear that the file is set for "Read Only" access or that I don’t have administrator rights to it. These factors have been checked and everything’s set properly.

The thing is, is that when I do the same operation from another computer that has Photoshop 7, it allows me to save the file with no error.

Is there a patch or something I need to correct this problem? Has anyone heard of this?

First, you should not edit files that do not reside on your local machine. Try copying the file in question to your local machine running PS6, and see if that doesn’t resolve the issue.

Dennis,

Yeah, I knew that would work. Is there some reason why editing files on a network is bad? It’s pretty common practice in my workplace.

It just seems like a silly thing to have to do. I mean, when you’ve got, say, 100 files that need some little area removed, you’d spend more time copying them to your hard drive (and back again) than you would doing the actual work.

I’m not a networking expert – perhaps Chris Cox could step in with more detail here – but I believe it has to do with network permissions, architecture and routing, and the way these things can slow the process of reading/writing files back and forth across the server.

Here where I work, we also run into issues with the server denying access simply because it’s full, (and we’re talking 20 terabytes of space!).

This article from Peter Linnell was written concerning Pagemaker, but it may be useful for Photoshop as well: <http://www.atlantictechsolutions.com/network.html>

Rich,

Woah! I’ll get back to you later once I read this. Thanks.

The main reason for not working across the network is the lack of error checking. When you have an application open and it is saving files it is writing directly to the drive. The operating system checks and balances are side-stepped. With a complex file structure, this can lead to troubles. And even worse, you won’t know there was a problem until you try to reopen the file. If you save locally, then use the operating system to move the files out to the network you get the benefit of error checking (CRC checks, etc.). Saving locally has the same risks with a complex file, but it doesn’t have the myriad of glitches (time outs, incomplete data packs, data collisions, etc.) that occur on a network. This is a quote from Ian Wright, from the ID and PM forums.
