I’m trying to run Photoshop 7 on a Windows 2000 Server in a Citrix environment. It won’t start at all. It’s not even creating a preferences file so I cannot kill that. It won’t even get to loading plugins. Also tried a complete reinstallation. Just wondered if anyone had any ideas on what to try?

What is a "Citrix environment"?

It’s an enterprise dealie like WTS, where users can log in with a thin client (or normal machine) to the server and run programs on the server, not just from the server.

Things to try:

1) Install Photoshop on the local machine, not a server.

In my experience, the performance of Citrix and WTS is good enough to run a program like Word. Definately not Photoshop.

Here is more detailed reasons why:

Bottom line: DTP applications like Photoshop do not belong on a Terminal or Citrix server.

Attemping to shoehorn these on WTS or Ctirix, belies a lack of understanding of Terminal Servers and/or Photoshop’s legitimate hardware requirements.

Peter,
I would love to debate the “understanding of Terminal Servers” but I have a problem on my hands. It is not by choice that I run these apps on a Citrix server for I do already know the repercussions. I am a very confident NT/Citrix administrator (MCSE, MCSA, and CCNA). Please do not question my knowledge on such matters as this situation is a product of my environment. In short I would appreciate it if you would leave your derogatory and unprofessional answers at home.

Ron,

That was un-called for.

Not only has Peter told you that you are attempting something with unreasonable expectations, but two of Adobe’s senior Photoshop engineers have echoed the same sentiments. Take their advice. You will not find more qualified people to offer you advice. Let alone the fact the advice comes free.

OR is the key word here.

Your question is one of several which have been posted here, in the Indesign and IRCC the Pagemaker forum.

I have no doubt you are a competent NT admin. But asking the question shows either a. Citrix inexperience (not applicable here) b. lack of Photoshop’s real world hardware requirements.

The referenced article is based on my real world experience and indepth knowledge of both.

It is VERY unlikely that you will succeed. We run Citrix, and did succeed at running ACAD over a terminal server envirnoment, eventually gave up due to perfomance issues. It is not possible to run Photoshop or InDesign or Pagemaker over this type of environment.

Even if one could get PS to install and run over the server, the sheer size and complexity of image files would bog down even the best designed Citrix network to a crawl.

Oh, and Peter does have a bit of a clue, he has more experience than I on these issues, and Chris Cox… well, hell, he is one of the PS engineers (check out the PS splash screen next time you run PS.. on a local machine, not the network), I think he might know a little about what he is talking about.
