I’m sure I’m overlooking something and this is probably a no brainer, but one of the things I like about my lightroom is having the black background behind my images, the one in my CS3 is grey, is it possible to change that color in CS3 to black? and if so, how?
use the paint bucket. then hold (alt or shift, if forget which) and click the grey area to change it to whatever color you want. the grey is 127, 127, 127 if you ever want to set it back…
Erm No. What William is referring to in the Photoshop main window. No amount of Paint Bucketing will change that.
William, Try this:
Grab the bottom of the main Photoshop window and "roll it up" to reveal the desktop underneath. Now get rid of your icons and change the desktop colour to black. That’s as near as you’re going to get.

While it may not be your preference, the neutral gray application background in Photoshop serves the purpose of not interfering with color or tone perception when viewing or editing images.
I get a black background on a single image when opened and the view set to "full screen mode" (hit ‘f’ key to toggle options). Hit ‘tab’ to clear out everything but your image with a black background.
I’d find this a bit too much as far as SOP though – too much contrast, I like the gray (or grey) much better…
