Clipboard bug in PS 7 plus workaround

In a past topic I wrote about problems with Photoshop 7 "randomly" changing the resolution (pixels/inch) on some of our images taken by a Powershot G2. We were pulling our hair out trying to figure out why only some images decided to drop in resolution out of large batches. I found at least one other post about the same subject but no real solutions.

As it turns out, we discovered through some sleuthing that it’s a rather nasty bug that was introduced in version 7; thankfully there is a fairly simple workaround.

How it happens. Lets say you have an image open that is 200 dpi and you have image data in the clipboard (that is not 200 dpi such as a screen shot – sure it could very well be 200 dpi but then you would never notice the bug). Now, if all you do is perform:

Image -> Adjust -> Variations

but hit "Cancel" versus another button, you will find that your original 200 dpi image is now the resolution of whatever image data was in the clipboard! This holds true for many of the other dialogs that contain a "Cancel" button E.G. filters and including the Extensis plug-in we use.

I have checked Photoshop 6 and cannot reproduce this behavior so it appears to have been introduced as of 7. Our workaround was to put a "Purge -> Clipboard" action at strategic locations in all our actions as well as setting up a hot-key to do the same in case we need it. Does anyone know if Adobe is aware of this bug and has plans to fix it for Photoshop 8?

I don’t recall seeing this bug, but will have someone take a look.

Holy moly, he’s RIGHT! Does that mean the image actually changed resolution, or is it an error in reporting of resolution?

Interestingly enough, if you follow the procedure, then do Image|Image Size… the dialog shows that the DPI dropped and (as one would expect) the print dimensions increased proportionately.

But if you have saved the file before doing this, then look at the file menu, the Save is grayed out, indicating no change.

Interesting.

The pixel dimensions are identical, so it’s not really that ‘nasty’

Right, I calculated that Mark, and agree, it’s not really detremental (sp??). It’s IS interesting though.

I don’t understand. How is this bug not detrimental?

I just took a 200dpi image:

W: 195 pixels / 0.975 inches
H: 300 pixels / 1.5 inches

stuffed some 72dpi image data in the clipboard, caused the bug to happen, and now my original image is:

W: 195 pixels / 2.708 inches
H: 300 pixels / 4.167 inches

Granted the pixel dimensions have not changed but the dpi has and so has the size on disk! This is *very* different than if I just chose to change the original 200dpi to 72dpi manually:

W: 70 pixels / 0.975 inches
H: 108 pixels / 1.5 inches

Can you explain why this is not so bad?

Did you have ‘resample image’ checked when you changed the resolution? If so, this changes the pixel data, hence the smaller pixel dimensions and smaller file size.

If the pixel dimensions are the same, size on disk should be the same as well…

I still say, while it’s annoying and a bug, it doesn’t affect quality or size.
